Birth control for Wedding day? (a little long)

So when planning the date for my wedding we basically picked it because it was a time that worked. a few month later I realized how awesome it was that wasn't going to have to worry about that time of the month because it's a week before and I have been pretty consistent for the last couple years! However a few months ago my body decided it didn't like that because it started moving on me! it was just a few day later each time except for the last 2 months when it has started exatly on the 4th! (My wedding is on a 4th).

Now background I have really bad cramps and am really heavy the first couple days and then after that I have 4 days of just wearing a liner. As you can see it is really annoying that it could happen the day of! I wouldn't care if it happened during the honeymoon, or if it was the 3rd- 4th day of my period on my wedding day. But come on the worst day of it on the actualy day!

So I guess the main question is would it be bad to go on birth control for a couple months just so I don't have to worry about it, or do I just need to suck it up and find someway to deal with it! I will be in my dress by 9:30 in the morning and I will not be taking it off untill after the reception which might be around 5-6. Thats a long day with cramps and a really heavy flow that will need to be changed atleast 2 times through the day. When it started moving on me I kept hoping it would keep going forward but now it's seem to have found it's new time.

This may also have just been more to complain about it than the actual question but it will still be nice to hear some opinions :-)

  • Yeah, that doesn't sound like a load of fun! I'm on Day 1 right now, so I hear ya [grrrr]. I am not an advocate of BCPs at all, but even if I was, I personally still wouldn't mess with my cycle just for the wedding day. Your cycle will likely change in the months leading up to your wedding, so it is really impossible to predict and really not worth the "damage" of taking BCPs. Can you speak to your doctor about other ways to minimize the symptoms (bloating, cramps, etc) without having to go on birth control or futz with your cycle?

I think if you can minimize your discomfort, you will be so distracted that day that you likely won't notice!

  • Someone just asked a similar question:

Medically, delaying menstruation is easier than that postor's issue. I think what's necessary to delay menstruation also won't interfere with NFP in the following weeks as much.

And people are going to tell you to see a super-specialist about using knowledge from NFP to get at the real issue. And I'm going to tell you that if one of the recommended super-specialists isn't in your area or doesn't take your insurance, check with the American College of Pro-Life OB-GYNs and your local crisis pregnancy center for the names of NFP-friendly OB-GYNs.
  • Mine was suppose to show two days after my wedding daying day. Not only did it show up a week late which was amazing, it only lasted 3 days. Sometimes God will take care of it for you! *Same thing happened to my cousin and sister strangely enough*
  • Even if you're not on bc now, won't you want to be on it by your wedding anyway?
  • I will not be on Birth contorol ever except for that time if I choose to do it, which probablly I'll be to lazy to do any way so probably wont happen, also hoping on the idea that before my wedding it will move again fomr stress! haha

Most of the ladies who regularly post here use Natural Family Planning (NFP), which is the only method of "birth control" allowed by the Catholic Church. There are several methods that are listed in the link Riss has posted in her top-of-the-page sticky. Generally, they allow a couple to read the signs a woman's body naturally produces to help a couple determine whether or not they are fertile. They can then make an educated decision about whether or not to have relations that day based on her waxing and waning fertility. When practiced correctly, NFP is as effective as hormonal birth control, if not more effective.

Keep in mind that it sometimes takes your body a few cycles to get "regular" even on ABC, and while your body adjusts, you sometimes have breakthrough bleeds.  I don't know if this would be a reasonable course of action just to avoid having your period on your wedding day.
