Catholic Weddings

Necessary??

Just a question, but are altar servers necessary? We're having a full mass ceremony for about 50 people, not all catholic. Do you think our father would need the additional help of altar servers?

He'll probably want one assistant - a deacon, an acolyte, an altar boy. But I've been to Masses for 50 people with only the Priest and one assistant.

I guess the only way to know is to ask him.  But like Elisabeth said, priests often do small masses without a server.

Ditto the suggestion to ask your priest.  Our priest didn't want the help.

It probably isn't necessary... but of course up to the discretion of your priest!  We had just a priest and deacon for 200 people (also not all catholic... probably 60%?) and it worked out fine!

    Ditto pp's. Just ask.

    We had 2 altar servers.

We just asked our priest, and he said it would not be necessary for the number of people who will participate, but that if we had someone special in mind, by all means ask them.

I hadn’t even thought about this! Ours is the same size as yours....plus almost all the guests are Prots. We (and the priest) are the only ones communicating so I don’t know if he would need help distributing.

Good question...you just reminded me to email our priest and ask him. We likely will only have about 50 people (unless a lot of people from church come, which is possible) and most of them will not be Catholic (again, unless people from the parish come, LOL).

Ask him. We did not have altar servers, though we did have a thorifur (sp) who was in the WP. Our parish routinely has mass without altar servers, so it was NBD.

We did not have them, come to think of it! It was fine.
