T & P Please

My FI and I have a big decision coming up. When I was eighteen my doctors found a previously undiagnosed heart condition. I’ve been on medication ever since. At the initial diagnosis, my cardiologist mentioned in passing that I needed to have a consult with a high-risk ob/gyn before I started making plans to have a family to determine if I could successfully carry a pregnancy to term. I never really thought about it, as I wasn’t sexually active. Well it is getting pretty near that time. I mentioned to my FI that I wanted us to make an appointment to find out together. I honestly believe this is something he should know before we get married. We are so scared to make the appointment. I am terrified to find out what the answer is going to be! It wouldn’t be a “can’t” situation; it would be a “shouldn’t” situation. Think Shelby from Steel Magnolias only instead of diabetes, it is a can my heart handle the additional stress of supporting another life? We’re praying about making the appointment and the results. Thank you everyone!  I know it is in God’s hands and that is really the best place we can be in.

Oh, Ms. GeorgiaPeach, I am saying a prayer for (and sending an internet hug to) you right now.  I hope that you and your FI get good news.

I will come back, but we're too scared to make the appointment. We've been referred to a specialist and I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've called the number and hung up! It feels like an impossible situation. Thank you all for the prayers and support. I feel lost.

Don't feel lost!  Marie, it's better to know that to stay in the dark and have to deal with the consequences of not preparing yourself.  Imagine what could happen if you got pregnant and then they evaluated your heart after the fact.  I will pray that you have the strength to make and keep your appointment.

Good luck, and I will pray that you will get a favorable answer. I understand being scared.

Could you maybe have your Mom make the appointment for you? I know this is something you "should" do, but you're right, you NEED to know this information prior to getting married, and time is getting short. Or will your FI do it?
