Ugh...annoying!

I read an article in the Washington Post about a DC church closing. It's a parish that's important to H and his family, and so I was interested.

I was about the explode by the end. The quotes from parishioners just made me mad!! One woman said something along the lines of "this was a parish for those Catholics who don't believe what the Church teaches, but still want to be Catholic." That sounds like a terrible thing! Another said something along the lines of "if women were ordained priests, we wouldn't be having this problem." (The parish is closing because there aren't enough JESUIT priests to run it, and the JESUITS do not want the diocese to take over it. That's not a priest shortage as much as an order shortage).

Anyways...it just upsets me to hear Catholics speaking so ignorantly, or so disrespectfully about the Church.

  • Wow. Really? That's terrible. I'm trying to understand why a person who claimed to be Catholic would say such a thing to the media. So sorry for your H's church :(

  • I find that most mainstream media articles about the Church seem to find "Catholics" who are more than willing to spout those things, and don't look very hard for Catholics who diagree to provide contrasting quotes. They always seem to use those comments to fill the end of the article.

Ress, I'm really sorry to hear about the closing of that parish. It's always sad to hear about parishes closing. I'm extra-sorry to hear that it involves a diocese/order disagreement. I find those so disheartening. We need a strong, unified Church, not one with internal disagreements popping up here and there time and again.

  • I've actually never been to the church, but H's family is all about it. I understand it closing, in the parish sense -- it's VERY small, and it's attached to a HS. Basically, it'll now be used exclusively by the HS, and for special events like weddings. I don't have a problem with that. If the Jesuits can no longer staff it as a full-functioning parish, and they want to keep it Jesuit-run (as is the connected school), then that makes sense.

  • That's sad to hear. I guess the same could really be said about any group, though. Like, here in OK, whenever a tornado hits, I feel like they find the reddest of rednecks to interview about the destruction.

Or GOOD LORD when people are interviewed about some scandal in a school. I have never seen so many uniformed statements in my life!

  • It's like all that stuff with Caroline Kennedy lately. She calls herself Catholic but has been preaching very anti-Catholic stuff lately as if it's what we believe. It's annoying.
  • That woman's comment (the one in the article and Caroline Kennedy) are comments that get under my skin. If Catholicism is so bad, then just leave. Go find another religion. I wish people would stop trying to water down my religion.

Many people like that make no secret of the fact that they are staying precisely because they are trying to "change" the Church. (Because your uneducated opinion is wiser than 2,000 years of some of the smartest thinkers and philosophers in the history of the world? {Augustine, Aquinas, etc.} Hm, ok...)

  • Not to mention, the Church CAN'T change it's stance on certain things -- women priests, BC, abortion...those are not ever going to change. It would be one thing if they were trying to change disciplines, like celibate priests or meat on Fridays, but what they're trying to change just highlights how out-of-touch they are with the Church.
