Gathering Song

I have a question for you smart ladies.  I would like to have one of my friends sing a solo (Panis Angelicus, church appropriate), the problem is that my sister is already singing a solo, after we exchange vows.  Is it appropriate to have the gathering song be a solo?

Re: Gathering Song

  • I think it would be just kind of ...awkward. Everyone will be standing there, like literallly standing and fidgeting, during the whole length of the song. That's the practical reason why it's not a great idea, but there's also liturgical and theological reasons.

Are you having a full mass?  Perhaps your friend can sing Pantis Angelicus during Communion.  We had our cantor sing this song then.  Also, our cantor sang a few songs during the Prelude instead of just organ music, one of which was Gifts of Love, which was very beautiful.

I agree - if you can, use the song during communion - or maybe as a prelude/postlude. That way, there is some "action" going on during the song.
  • Speaking of gathering songs...is it appropriate to have a gathering song after the bridal party processional and bride's entrance, or should the mass just start after my dad hands me off to my fiance?  What about recessionals?  Did you sing a verse and then walk out?

  • I've had some priests require a "gathering song" after the procession. It was meant to get people to start participating in the mass (so had to be something for the congregation to sing). It's not done a lot, so if you do it, make sure the priest knows.

The recessional can be instrumental or sung. You don't have to wait for anything before you starting walking.
  • Okay thanks for the thoughts ladies, I'm sure we'll work something out :(  We aren't doing a full mass because FI isn't catholic yet (we're doing RCIA classes together this fall).  Thanks for your thoughts ladies!! :o)
