we would love to hire a violinist to play the music for our wedding ceremony. is this typically allowed in a catholic church or do i have to use their organist? we won't be meeting with our priest again for a while so i just wanted to get an idea if i can even consider this.

    A violinist is a good auxillary, but it shouldn't be the main thing. Meaning, there should be organ or piano to sustain the singing, and a violinist can be in addition to that.

    Ask the music director, because most have a list of musicians they book from that they play with often so they don't have to rehearse.

    We had a choir and a string quartert - no organ/piano. I think if you only had 1 violinist, you'd need something more substantial to support the sung sections. My sister used a string trio, but did not have any singing (she did not do Communion).

    I agree with pp's. We are having an organist and someone who is cantoring for us. I would just ask your priest. And do talk to your parish music director as ours was very helpful in giving us names of people that cantor for area churches.

    A friend of mine is an Irish fiddler.  She was booked nearly every weekend for Irish Catholic weddings while we were in law school.  She and her fellow Irish musicians were the only ones in the church.

    A lot of times you have to hire the organist and pay them even if you don't use them ever.  Same thing for the cantor.  A violinist would be fine as long as you also have a cantor for the psalm.

    It's definitely a possibility, just be sure to ask your priest before arranging for the violinist.  You could always call him and ask him on the phone if this is something you want to start looking into. 

    We are having an organist as well as a bagpiper. The bagpiper will play a couple of songs as guests are arriving, the organist will play whichever song I choose for the girls to enter to, then the piper will play for my entrance. The organist will handle most of the music during the ceremony, then we will exit to the bagpiper.

    But before arranging any of this, I did talk to my priest to make sure it was ok to have the piper.
