I am in shock

DH is 1500 miles away on business. He called last night, and 15 minutes into the conversation casually mentions that he thinks when he tried to buckle his seatbelt in the cab this evening, he got stabbed in the finger with a needle.

I freaked out for about 5 minutes. And then told him he needs to go to the ER. They ran some bloodwork and gave him some vaccines. Logically, my medical brain knows the risk of contracting any disease from a needle KNOWN to be contaminated is low, let alone one of unknown status. But my wife brain is going nuts. And we will have to wait 6 months until he can be retested for HIV (as well as to be intimate). I just can't believe this is happening.

It's hard to think rationally in these situations, but hopefully once the shock wears off you'll be better. I hope your DH is ok and you'll be in my prayers.

as a side note, this would also probably qualify for worker's comp.

    That's horrible!  What a pain.
I'm assuming he also got tested for hep B/C?  Since the needle is an unknown entity, was he offered prophylactic triple antivirals?  Is he UTD on his DTaP?  Sorry, my medical brain kicked in too.
You both are in my prayers.

Scary!!!  I'd freak out, too... you're both definitely in my prayers.

Did he actually confirm it was a needle? Did he report to the cab company immediately--maybe they can search the cab and locate the item that may have pricked his finger?

    Thank you ladies.

Yes, he called the cab company. He has the cab number on the receipt, but they told him that he needed to file a police report in the ER before they would do anything. Unfortunately, I was post-call when he got out of the ER, which means I was a zombie and have no idea if all that happened. He's flying home right now, and I will find out in a few hours.

I was able to make out that they gave him DTaP and Hep B (since he couldn't remember if he had his series. Really, H? Making your doctor wife look bad!) I don't yet know if they gave him HIV prophylaxis.

I didn't think about workers' comp. That's a good idea. I only thought about the cab company reimbursing us for out of pocket costs.

I'm so sorry to hear this.  I'll be praying for you both.

And, as Calypso said, it would be worth looking into worker's comp for this.  Or, um, if you have any lawyer friends...

yes, if he was on business, he should absolutely report it to his HR dept.  if he has to miss any time from work related to this, it should nto come out of his own sick time and no moeny shoudl come out of his wallet.
