Invitation Wording

Hi Ladies!!  I don't frequent this board that often but I am having a catholic ceremony in October.  We haven't meet with our priest yet to do the final  layout of the mass but I thought I would start with the invitation.  Can you please look at the wording and give me some advice what I should add or what I should change.  Thank in advance.

Our wording for the invitation:

Mr. & Mrs. Chris C. #### and

Dr. & Mrs. James S. #####

request the honor of your presence at the Nuptial Mass uniting

Ashley #### #####

and

Matthew ###### #######

in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony

Saturday, the Thirteenth of October

Two thousand and twelve

two in the afternoon

Saint Church

201 Somewhere Street

Re: Invitation Wording

  • I think it looks fine!

I would make it "Two Thousand Twelve," and "two o'clock in the afternoon," but otherwise it looks great!

  • Sorry Prof but two thousand and twelve is lousy math but correct etiquette for invitations.

You can leave the street addressout  because you are including the name of the church and the town.  That's enough

</div><div>I suppose this is a case where I would advise ignoring proper etiquette in favor of being correct, but the "and" does not bother other people nearly as much as it bothers me.  I have definitely seen arguments for both writings.</div><div>

  • It's also poor grammar but that's what Crane's says.
  • I used the following as I've started working on the wording for my invitations - it also says there should be no "and," and has some tips on what should/shouldn't be capitalized.  Hope it's helpful!

  • its not technically correct wording, because the Mass does not unite you in marriage.  the Mass is said in your honor.

id leave the street address on there so people can GPS directions.

    i would do:

    Mr. & Mrs. Chris C. #### and

    Dr. & Mrs. James S. #####

request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their children

    Ashley #### #####

    and

    Matthew ###### #######

in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony and the celebration of the Nuptial Mass

    Two thousand and twelve

    two in the afternoon

  • Oh, yeah, I was going to say that about the street address.  We were married at Christ the King Catholic Church in Dallas.  There is also a Christ the King Evangelical Church somewhere in Ft. Worth (an hour's drive).  Our Best Man just plugged "Christ the King" into his GPS the night of the rehearsal and ended up at the wrong one.

  • i think in this day and age, where people dont always get married in the town they grew up in, to a local person, adn tehy are friends with people who live all over its important to have the street address on there since not everyone will know the church or where it is.  it also saves you having to print and enclose separate directions cards which can be a hassle.

  • Don't listen to Crane's. We've had much discussion about this in English Department meetings and as a collective group we've decided that Two Thousand Twelve is correct and appropriate over Two Thousand and Twelve. There are a few grammatical and syntactical reasons why, but I don't feel like going into detail. Ditto two o'clock. You could also word it two in the afternoon, that's still appropriate and correct. That's what I went with. It was more symmetrical with the length of the other lines in the invitation. i'm all about the symmetry.
  • But we ordered the invitations from Crane's and they told us that was the correct wording , etquitte wise.  I checked the library and they were the same.

I checked the site and they insiste it's correct.  We accepted it because Crane's the expert on invitation etiquette!

Please don't tell me that we have to do the whole wedding over!
  • AG, we're getting married on the same date at the same time :)

For the "two thousand AND twelve" discussion, it is not correct.  Putting the word "and" in a word form of a number implies a decimal.  I am not a stickler for things like this, but the "and" in a number drives me insane!  I hate when people put that on invitations or say it in a graduation.  Huge pet peeve.
  • There's been this massive debate over the wording of things such as date's. We discuss it all the time in our English department meetings. The best we can come up with is that it comes down to which language rules a company is using. If you were living in England, Two Thousand AND Twelve would be considered correct and proper etiquette. In America, it's not. i also think that because the Church is based in Rome and has been following those same rules, we also get the AND as acceptable. If you've already printed it, don't worry about it. No one will really notice enough.

I omitted a comma on my invitation wording, and no one has said a word about it. I think I'm honestly the only person who knows and the only person it bothers. Your invites will look fine!
  • I looked at their site and they have both national and international ways of contacting them. I'm thinking that even though they are located in America, they also operate globally, so their invitations are standard for everywhere they send them to.
  • Thanks ladies.  I haven't printed yet.  I actually haven't even decided on an invitation.  We can't decide if we are going to make them or have someone else make them.  Any suggestions?

<div>That all depends on you.  I am not remotely crafty, nor do I have the time/patience to make something as intricate as I wanted for invitations, so I hired someone.</div>

  • I used this-
I ended up just using the monogram, and removed it from the graphic that they give you, and used microsoft publisher to design a similar-looking invitation for my own, but it was a great place to start.

  • alot use Etsy to have them made.

we just paid a stationer to do ours.  it was pricey, but the invites came out really nice and because we had a small wedding i didnt need to order many.  we also didnt have a lot of other expenses as we cut alot of frivolities so that gave us the money for invites.

I used Etsy for my save-the-dates and table numbers and had a (mostly) great experience.  I tried to use an Etsy seller for my invites, but she got horribly ill and had to cancel all her orders.  =(  Obviously that's not her fault or Etsy's -- the same could have happened to the local girl who ended up doing my invites!
