A few relatives mad...no children at reception

We asked that no children be at the reception, and a few of his family members are upset about this. We are having a formal, sit down dinner and dancing reception. I love our families children on his side and mine, but I have been to a ton of weddings where the kids are all over the place because the parents think "Well HEY we're around family so its one giant daycare".  They were out dancing while the bride and groom had their dance, they get trampled by adult dancers who have been drinking, Ive seen them mess around with DJ stuff.....I just don't want that at our wedding. Plus the head count would also go up and they are just about the same price.

Our flower girl and ring bearer will be there for the ceremony and dinner, then their grandmother is taking them home with her. Why am I being made to look like the bad guy when my FI LOVED the idea.  They told his mother that they are not going if their children aren't welcome. They don't understand that we are not trying to upset anyone, we just have a vision of how our day will be and why the heck wouldn't they like a night out ot enjoy themselves!?

I keep getting told that it is just a few people and not to stress but my stomach is in knots about this. Should I have FI call them to let them know how we feel or just let it be? It REALLY made this holiday season awkward. A few of his aunts treated me very differently.
