Anyone doing a grooms cake?

Depending on the number of people actually coming to the wedding depends on whether or not I get to spend money on little extras like a grooms cake.  I would love to surprise FI with a cake shaped like a Pittsburgh Penguin or a bottle of Grand Marnier.

Do you guys know what something like this costs or any recommendations on cake designers for this?

I wanted to soooooo bad. FI has been begging for a PlayStation 3 so I thought I'd be cute and get him a grooms cake shaped like one (get it? get it? LOL). It was about $250 and fed 50 people so the majority of the price was design/labor. I only inquired with the company also doing my wedding cake.

I was JUST emailing my FMIL about this subject.  I've decided to do a small groom's cake, but we're going to have it at the RD.  It's a good way to save money since you're only having it for a limited number of peeps and guests don't need to have mutiple cake options at the wedding necessarily. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get mine from Publix - Best cakes ever!

I'm doing a surprise cake for FI. It's going to be a laptop and the board it sits on will be like a desk top. I have a surprise cake topper for the desk in our likeness dressed as our video game characters. The desk will also have 3 pastiage/fondant/gum paste pieces to decorate the desk... Feeding about 40ish.. 150 for all.. I thought it was an amazing deal! I'm so excited about it. I saw the finished cake topper pic today! LOVE IT!

I ditto bre, publx all the way.  They will customize most cakes (don't rely on what they have onthe website, they accomodate much more designs than that), they are yummy and affordable.  I would have gone with them for my wedding cake but it was included in our caterer's package. I am getting FI a smaller groom's cake for the RD, I am going to have it centered around Boston sports teams.

I decided against a groom's cake. Our venue provides a dessert with dinner and then we have our wedding cake which is a pretty good reflection of us done with a scrabble theme. I have heard of some people doing the groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner and I think that's a great idea.

BTW...We are actually going to DC for our honeymoon. Any recommendations on things we should do? I haven't been since I was 9 and am excited to go.

I am surprising FI with one at the RD. Like PPs said, having it at the RD will keep costs down because it won't need to feed as many people. Our wedding is in NY but if it was in Florida we would definitely be getting the cake through Publix! I love their cakes.

I saw that a lot of you reccomend Publix for wedding cake....FI and I were just talking about that! Will Publix deliver the cake to the site or do you have to pick it up?

Publix will deliver in most areas, I am going to get a Grooms cake made out of cupcakes in the shape of an XBOX360 controller for the rehearsal dinner. I am getting mine from publix too.

I must have gone to the wrong publix! They weren't even able to do my wedding cake and it isn't a complicated design!

Can the Publix girls share which one they went to?

If you do a wedding cake I would recommend the Greenwise Publix stores. They usually have an area dedicated to wedding cakes & you can set up tastings.
