It may sound stupid but....

Whats the point of a Signature Drink? Is it something like...1 drink that is paid for by the B&G that guests drink free? Or what?

I think it could be why you listed above, but I've read that it's good to do a signature drink for 2 reasons:

    1. You can relate it to your theme somehow or pick something that really just fits the 2 of you as a couple
    2. If you're paying for drinks by consumption, then depending on how they measure consumption, it might be better to have a lot of drinks that come from the same liquor bottle.

I went to a wedding recently where it was only beer and wine at the reception but the cocktail hour had beer, wine, and their signature drink.  We're not doing it, but I think it can be a cute idea.

    Lol.
I'm not sure of the technical purpose, but my guess (or my reasons for possibly having one)would be
    1.  Another cutesy little thing to do to personalize your wedding
    2.  A way to have some sort of liquor available (for those who do not like wine or beer) when you are technically having a "beer and wine only" reception
    3.  A way to cut costs at the bar (if having an open bar)... a huge batch of pre-mixed adult beverage-y deliciousness would likely be less expensive than paying by the drink.  You can also, somewhat, get away with cheaper liquors (becuase people won't be ordering a "Jameson and Ginger"... they might order a "Relaxed Groom" which would be described as "Whiskey and Ginger Ale"  you wouldn't have to tell them it's not top shelf, ya know.

Hm. I guess that all makes sense!

Josh and I are buying a keg (maybe 2) to have on tap and once those run dry, its all cash bar. A good amt of our guest list doesnt drink for various reasons, and another good amt...well...I dont want to be held responsible for how theyd act if the drinks ran free!

But I keep hearing about signature drinks and wanted to know what it was all about.

We had open bar and no sig drink. We do that a LOT at work for events and they never go over all that well. People drink what they want and usually aren't interested in a special drink.

Me and my FI are still in the gathering ideas stage, and are thinking of having beer and wine, plus a signature drink. This way there will be another (alcoholic) choice to drink, and we can still keep costs down without having to stock a full bar.
