Wedding Attendee?

H and I are going to his friend's wedding this weekend.  The invitation says Black Tie Optional and is at a really fancy place in Manhattan.  The problem is that the marriage ceremony is at 3:30pm so we have your typical Catholic time gap because the reception doesn't start until 7pm.  Am I right in thinking that he would have to wear a suit to the ceremony since it's in the afternoon?  Then change during the gap into the tux for the evening reception?  That seems like a lot of trouble, but I still kinda want him to do it.

That seems really odd to me.

Do you have any way to find out what other guests are doing?

TBH, while I LOVE my hubby in a tux... unless I was planning an outfit change in between (shorter dress to long evening gown), then I wouldn't expect him to change either.

I'd probably make FI do that too, I guess I'm not sure what will you be doing in between.  If wherever you entertain yourselves for the lull you'll be with other weddign guest and not standing out as the one wierdo in a tux in a bar at 5 pm then I suppose you could go with out a change.

He was planning to ask another friend who owns a tux what he was doing.  I'll see what he says.

I definitely won't be changing!  No evening gown for this girl.  My dress is a black coctail dress though, so I think it'll look fine with the tux if he wears it.

Lol!  I wasn't suggesting you change... just saying that if I wasn't putting myself through the hassle of making a wardrobe change, I wouldn't ask/expect DH to... I think it just seems a bit much to ask of a wedding guest, KWIM?  Either it's a formal event or its not... and expecting people to dress accordingly is one thing... but making it such that people should change attire 1/2 way through just seems inconsiderate, IMHO.

What if you were driving from an hour away or so?  Would you change in the car?  In the church bathroom?  It just seems weird... I dunno... just my two cents.

I agree; it is weird!  I'm really excited for the wedding because I'm sure it'll be super nice, but the whole Black Tie thing doesn't fit well because of the time gap.
