Vaccinations?

We're going to Cancun for our honeymoon in 2 weeks.  Yesterday someone at work made a comment about getting vaccinations because we're going to a different country.  I really hadn't thought about it.  Last year we went to Jamaica and I don't remember doing anything special to prepare.  Any thoughts on this?

I went there a few years ago and didn't have any special vaccinations, but who knows if things have changed. All I know is that we had to brush our teeth with  (and obviously drink) bottled water. So I'm not much help, but have a great time! I had a BLAST there!!!! 349873493874X better than Aruba!

Meh.  I think there are just as many germs and dirty people in downtown Syracuse.  lol.

If vaccines are important to you, you should stay up to date regardless of whether you will be traveling or not.  Granted different countries carry different risks and there are differemt vaccines that you should get accordingly, but you should be set for the basics anyway.

Personally, I have been vaccinated for anything and everything under the sun and then some, compliments of the needle happy Navy docs during my time in the USMC.  I am not really into getting anything additional unless I deem absolutely, positively necessary.  For me, for Mexico... I would just "not drink the water"  lol.

I think good hand hygiene (hand washing and anti-bacterial stuff) and general precautions are usually pretty satisfactory.  Nurse Monica should scream vaccines, though.  HTH

There aren't any vaccine requirements for travel to Mexico, but this website lists some health information for travels: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/mexico.htm

Haha!! I worked with an ex Navy Corpsman and he used to say the same thing all the time!!!

Anyway...like Monica said being up to date on your shots and good hygeine are always your most imporant ways to fight germs.  If you are looking for some extras that also might be helpful though you should get your Hepatitis B (most health care workers have it), Hepatitis A (optional, but a good idea), and make sure that your tetanus shot (the shot you get every 10 years) had Pertussis in it (the disease it prevents called whooping cough is going around in some areas.  Other than that I can ask the docs tomorrow at work for you and see what they say :)
