guest book ideas?

We were thinking of straying away from the traditional guest book where people don't seem to write much in it and you'd rarely pull out the book to look through.
I saw somewhere that someone had the guests write notes on cards, for them to then put into a rollodex so that they can flip through it in the future.

I thought that was a fun idea but i don't know. Just a rollodex seems different.

I know people do the sign around a frame thing, or a plate, but i'd prefer something they can write their name and a message if they'd like.

Any suggestions?
What worked for you?

I really wanted to do a thumbprint tree that we could hang on our wall, but my grandmother bought a guestbook to use, and I would feel bad not using it.

We are doing a thumbprint tree. Basically it is a picture of a tree with no leaves. There are ink pads that guests use to leave a thumb prints on the tree that look like leaves. Then they can write their names next to the print or a small message. :) After we frame it and can hang it on our wall.

My fiance and I met and started dating in college. Lucky for us, the university just released a coffee table history book, which is going to be our guest book. On the table I'm going to put a framed picture of us from graduation and a sign that says something about our history starting at the school and encouraging people to pick a page and leave a note.

We are also doing a thumbprint tree. I had no idea how popular this idea was until I started lurking on TK last year. Some people buy a print/poster, I painted mine on canvas.
You can't read it, but our names and date will go in the heart center.

We did a photo guest book, used pics from our engagement shoot and a "wishing well"... used business size cards and one one side had "Advice for the newlyweds" the other said "Where do you see us in 5 or 10 years"... then they dropped them into huge wine glasses.  Sadly, not too many participated in either one.  The answers that we did get were pretty cute though.

I'm thinking about doing a thumb print tree as well. Since I'm doing a fall-themed wedding, I thought it would be cute to have the thumb prints be orange and yellow to look like fall leaves.

I'm doing a "traditional" guest book, but am adding some of our engagement photos on the backs of the pages to make it more interesting for guests and for us later.  It will be at the reception, not the chapel as there's no room there and I feel people are more likely to actually write a message at the reception.

I have little cards and I'm going to make a sign to let people know to write their wishes, memories, etc ... I made a box for people to drop photos from the photobooth in (will make a sign for that too) ... after the wedding I'm going to scrapbook everything :)

Since my fiance and I met working at our college bookstore, I am going to buy a collection of blank books, and print a different title on each of them asking a question (ex. What's the best marraige advice you've ever been given? What is your favorite memory of us? Where do you think we'll be in 10 years? Where should we go for our 25th anniversary? etc.) I will place one in the middle of each table, and people can write more personal messages during dinner and dessert. Hopefully it'll also serve as a conversation starter, and possibly encourage people to mingle between tables. After the wedding we plan to display the collection on a bookcase.

Our photographer is giving us an engagement photo session book to use as our guest book.  They will intentionally leave pages blank (or with small pics on them) as areas for our guests to sign.  This way our book can sit on the coffee table and not only can we look at the photos, but also the well wishes from everyone that attended.

Another idea for the guestbook that builds on the thumbprint tree (or any flat guestbook ideas) is to have the item scanned and applied to a serving tray for a permanent reminder of the day. The idea is this: you have a flat paper of some sort taped to the tray, the tray gets passed from table to table, people write their names, anything on it, then the paper gets scanned and applied to a serving tray!

Why not use the guestbook as a sign-in or bestwishes book and still do the the thumbprint tree? You could put the guestbook by the entry door on a special table, and then have your attendents go around to the tables with the tree page? Hey, they could even put on police hats and shades to look like they are "booking" the guests!!

I made my own photobooth, and people made their own scrap book pages from the pictures that printed out. One printer printed out a photo for the book, the other printed out a photo with a border and "thanks for celebrating with us" with our name and the date on it. (and now that I made the darn thing, I'm renting it out if anyone is interested... )

I was terrified that no one was going to use it, but it was a HUGE hit. There were some hiccups, but that's because my wedding was my trial run.

Did everyone do it? No, and that's very unfortunate, but what is a "traditional" guest book? Just a list of signatures of the people who came... I have that in excell! lol
