Makeup primer??

I've heard some of you talk about a "primer" used prior to makeup application that helps the makeup stay put.  Can anyone fill me in on what this is??Also, if you have any other makeup items you would like to recommend because they last all day, don't hesitate.  FTR - I did buy Model in a Bottle.

I have used Mac's eyeshadow primer and it works really well. It comes in a stick form (the one I bought did) and you apply it before you apply your eyeshadow and you will wake up with your eyes looking the same as when you went to sleep...well your eyeshadow anyway!

And it doesn't clump?  Any eyeshadow base I've used ends up in my eyelid creases.

Erin, Get Smashbox Photo Finish Primer - it's awesome! Then, use Model in a Bottle as a setting spray. The combination of these two products do wonders!!

Just don't put a ton on...but it never has on me. Here is the website if you want to check it out. It's $16.50 but you don't need a ton and it goes a long way. http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CAT153&PRODUCT_ID=969

Erin- which Model in a Bottle item did you purchase? I just looked at their website and they have a setting spray that says it keeps your foundation and eye shadow on all day and night.

It's gotta be the setting spray then.  It's the stuff that you spray on after you're completely done putting on your makeup.  I'm skeptical though.

I love the oil free photofinish and the toofaced eye primer is fantastic. I have also used the Laura Mercier oil free primer and like it (but it's pricier so I don't buy it). Also, Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder #2 is really great for setting makeup.

This is what I purchased to get the photo finish primer: http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?skuId=2204819&productId=xlsImpprod1100216&navAction=push&navCount=1 I still use ALL the makeup that came with the "Runway Glam" box... this was one of the best makeup purchases I've ever made! you can probably find a coupon code for free shipping, too. HTH!

Laura Mercier has a great primer.  It keeps your make-up looking fresh all day.  You can get it at Sephora or Saks.  Bare Minerals also has a great primer for mineral make-up.  I have seen it at Ulta Beuaty in Deerfield Towne Centre.

Sephora. You can test out, purchase, even use it all up and still if you aren't totally satisfied return it for a full refund (no date restriction!).  Also, have a make up artist do a make up trial for you to show you how to use it. You can ask for a sample of ANYthing as well.  They will package a small sample of several primers for you to take home and try out. I'm not sure of the exact cost of everything I rec'd. But, I do kow that the photo finish primer is less expensive in the smaller squeeze tubes than the full size pumps. And, as an added bonis, you can cut the tubes to get every last drop- can't do that with the pump. Same with the toofaced eye primer.

Nancy of Brideface used Model in a Bottle to spray on my face after my makeup trial and my makeup was still looking pretty flawless 12 hours later.

I use Avon Face Perfector. I first heard about it on Nancy's (of Brideface) blog. And she used it for my trial and for my wedding day. Definitely a lot more affordable than Smashbox and others!

I was reading some magazine a few months ago and they said that saline solution acts the same way as an eyeshadow primer. I tried it and it worked for me. I dipped my eye shadow brush in a small drop of saline and then applied the shadow to the brush, then on my eyelids and it worked really well.

FYI There is an Ulta Cosmetics store out in Mason, Ohio. You can get a lot of really great products for much cheaper than in the regular stores. They run a lot of 2 for 1 deals and that kind of thing. They also feature coupons on their store. Before I make the drive up there I usually call to the store and find out if they have the product I want. Good luck!

I'm thinking about going into a makeup store and doing some testing this weekend.  Maybe if I get enough samples, I won't need to buy anything!!! ;-) Another question.... If I use a really good primer, does it matter if I use cheaper makeup on top of that?  And then spray it with Model in a Bottle??

If you're going into a store ask them about make up that photographs well.  I have to say, I do think some are better and tend to be pricier.  How close are you to Sephora? You know, you could schedule a visit for a make up lesson on your wedding day and have your foundation and eyes done, purchase your lipstick and use your own model in a bottle.  I was really happy with my e-pics makeup (might have been slightly heavy) and a sephora MU artist did it free.  They can just match your skin tone and even things out so well!

Sephora is in Kenwood, right?  I mean...I suppose I could do that....

It is in Kenwood.  They say they don't technically do special occasion makeup, but I am so impressed with both Alisha and Santoshi and they are both such perfectionsists that they won't let you walk out half done. I schedule an appt. and tell them I'd like makeup lessons for complexion and eyes and have never been dissappointed. Always be very specific about the look you want- dramatic vs natural, etc.  I feel like you'll save a load of money having them do it since it doesn't seem like you'll really use all that make up if you ahve to end up buying it.

I prefer Sephora over Ulta and I think it is purely the atmosphere at Sephora that I like better. At Ulta, they sell both expensive makeup as well as makeup like Covergirl and Maybelline. If you go to Ulta and they show you something you like but it is more than you prefer to spend, maybe they will recommend a similar item/color in a cheaper brand like Covergirl. They only thing is that you can't try on the cheaper brands (at least the last time I was there, I couldn't.)
