A question for those of you that have had gel nails

So Geneva FINALLY has a nail salon that does this. I was just wondering how much anyone else has paid for these. They offer clear for $70 or French for $90. Is this reasonably priced? No other salon in Geneva does these, so I don't have another to compare to. They also don't even do acrylics, which is what I usually get, so I can't even compare the price on those. Thanks for any input!

I know Monica has them so she can give you exacts, but that sounds ridiculously high to me. I have acrylics and to put them on I think only cost me like $30 and gels I believe are only maaaybe $40-50.

When I have my nails filled and french tip, the place in Shoppingtown Mall charges me $20.

But it makes sense that theyre high. If theyre the only place around to do them, they can charge whatever they want. But I think its high...

It sounded high to me too. I usually pay $35 for acrylics here, but I know the gel are usually more. I wasn't expecting it to be more than double. Maybe the drive will be worth it if I can get them done up there for around $50.

Holy overpriced!!!  I'm am so glad I logged in tonight.  That is RE-FREAKING-DONKULOUS!!!  I have never paid more than $60 for the gels... I think the norm is around $50-$60.  $80-$90??  w.t.f.  I know it's only a $20-$40 difference, but still... WOW.

Like Bridgett said, they are the only one in the area, so they can do whatever they want and people will pay, but that's crazy.

Also, FWIW, I never bother to get the french tips, because the tips they use are pretty white and they show through the gel overlay nicely... so you still get the look of the French manicure without the spray painted on look of the stark white tips.  Just my personal opinion, but I like it much better.

Thanks ladies! I guess they are really taking advantage of the lack of competition. Glad to know I wasn't being a cheapskate thinking they were pricey lol.

I'm with Monica on this one!  Utica must be cheaper than your area.  Here a set of acrylics are $20-25, and my gel nails were $27.  Both are no where near $80-90!!

I get Shellac manicures for special events. It's $40 for application in NYC, where, of course, everything is overpriced. So, yeah, I think that price is insane.

OMG I pay $15 for a remove and reapply for shallac! she charges me $40 for a shallac pedi.... I know some of the chain mi nails and like the mall nail places have a differnt gel polish manicure gelish or gelsies or something that is like $20.  Granted Im a religous "shallacer" and tip well so my private lady hooks it up a lttle.

I'm assuming OP is talking abut gel nails not polish, which still that is outrageous when I used to do acrylics it was 30ish for a new set and 15 for fill I know her gels are a little more maybe 40 nd 20 but no way more than $50.

At a high end salon in Rochester it's $40 for regular priced gels. I just used a groupon and got a deal on mine. The Rochester groupons have nail deals like every week. Maybe you can get one for Syracuse.  I love the gel nails better than acrylic or shellac. They look great and last longer!

I just wanted to mention -- I think shellac gel polish that some people are mentioning is different from the gel nails from the original post.  The shellac gel polish goes on your real nails (and lasts for 2 weeks);but aren't the gel nails fake nails they put on?

Yes, the ones I am talking about are the tips with gel done similar to the way acrylics are. I've had acrylics hundreds of times, but wanted to try the gel but couldn't find a place locally that did them. I've had the gel polish, but my nails are super short right now and I wanted to add some length.

Thanks everyone for your input. I might try heading up to Rochester or Syracuse this week to get them done at a more reasonable price.

This is not about any of the above-mentioned manicure methods, but I have had the silk tips done, once in NYC and once at a place called Snappy Nails on w. genesee st (just a little ways down from target). I REALLY liked them! For those who don't know, they glue a little strip of frabic to your nail and then do the..... you know, gel thing over it? By using the fabric instead of the acrylic tip, it's easier on the natural nail when its time to come off. I don't ever get my nails done because i hate how my nails feel wen the nails come off, and with the silk tips, my nails were really long underneath when the fake nails came off. Just a side note, thought I'd try to be helpful lol

Lorna - I considered the silk wraps, but I've heard they are really delicate. Did they break easily? I can be a little rough on my nails so I was worried about getting them done and having them all busted up after a couple of days lol. Around here the silk are about the same price as the acrylic.

I didnt find them to be anymore delicate than acrylic nails, in fact I felt like they lasted longer than when I've ever had acyrlics! Acrylics usually last around 2 weeks and I think the silk wraps lasted at LEAST 3. They were sooo easy to take off though, a good long soak in acetone ti dissolve the gel and then all that's left is to tear the silk off the natural nail and it was very easy to do that. Hardly any damage to my natural nails.

I'd recommended going to Victor, there's a place called ProfessioNAIL that's in the plaza with Pier 1, across from Eastview. I had regular gel's done there for my wedding for like 30, and for once I was able to peel them off in the shower after two weeks and get them off without damage to my nails. I'm going back just for that reason alone..
Where I've had a gel elsewhere my nails were majorly damaged.
I saw someone else getting tips there.
