What to register for?

I hope this doesn't come off as impertinent, but in what price range did most of the gifts you received fall? When I registered at Macy's, the girl there said that $50-$65 was the range most people shop in. FI and I have been college students for a long time and living apart in different cities. Everything we have is either college student crap or hand me downs, except for the bed and mattresses I bought last winter. So kitchen gadgets just aren't a priority for us. We need more long term quality things and more expensive items like a microwave, comforter, a drill, etc. I don't want to register for things I don't really need, I want to minimize clutter in my life in general and only have quality things and things I really need and love. And I don't want to get any more temporary stuff, I've had enough of temporary. But at the same time, I want to register for things my guests can comfortably afford. I've realized that a fancy set of china and crystal glassware aren't going to happen. So any info about popular price ranges or items you especially love in those price ranges would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't registered yet, but I know as a guest, I wouldn't want to buy something for someone that they really don't want. I would put what you want on the list. People can always get you gift cards to the store in an amount they can afford or give you cash. And most places offer a 20% off discount for anything left on your list after the wedding, and then you can get what you want. FI and I are in close to the same situation, so I understand where you're coming from.

I'm not sure if this answers your question or not... But, as a guest, I spend about $50 on a gift.  If there's nothing on the registry that I can afford, I'll just give money.  OR - some people will go in on a big ticket item.  There are also family members that will probably spend more than the "typical guest" and will get you some of those more expensive items. I wouldn't spend a lot of time worrying about that. Register for what you want.  Just make sure that ALL of the items aren't $100+.  I guess I'd just suggest to mix up the price range a little bit.

When we registered we registered for a lot of different price points, but kept most items between $50 and $100.  We got everything we wanted which was great. We too were coming from college and we registered for really nice pots and pans and dishes so that they would last us. We also registered for really nice coffee maker and appliances that we knew we would use a lot. Some of our items were as much as $400 and we still received them. I say register for what you want and you might be surprised. Try to do a wide variety so anyone can afford it. A lot of people go in on gifts together so they can get you something nicer. Most of our the gifts we received were $50 - $100. I say go nice so you won't regret it later.

Register for both $50-100 items. You'd be surprised how much peole will spend on gifts. I had a lot of gifts $50 and below bought for just my showers. Even if you register for more expensive items they go on sale and people usually use coupons. We registered for one of those kitchen aid mixers ($300) and someone bought it!!! Yeah... I know.... they went over board! Hope that helps and have fun registering

We registered for items ranging in price from $4.99 to $379.00. We registered for things we wanted and know we'll use, regardless of price. We also knoew that the 2 places we registered with offer a percentage off after the wedding for all unpurchased registry items and several of these items we are going to purchase for ourselves if we don't get them. Keep in mind, this is a wish list and none of your guests are being forced to purchase off of your registry. HTH!

You ladies have totally made my day. At first I thought registering was going to be like being a kid in a candy store, then I thought I couldn't actually register for anything useful, and now my hope is restored. Maybe this can be fun after all. Thanks, everyone!

Don't feel like you can't allow yourselves to ask for the "nice things."  That's what a registry is for!   Register for the good cookware.  Register for the good quality bedspread.  Register for GOOD stuff, because that's when we get the good stuff-- when we get married Your friends and family will want you to have nice things, and they'll do what they can to help make that happen. Price points were a concern for me, too-- our families do not come from a lot of money and I did not want to appear greedy or anything like that.  So, we registered at several places that offered several different price points (BB&B, Target, and Sears).  If someone couldn't find a gift at Sears, the could look at Target.  As a guest, I have always appreciated the option of multiple registries, so I knew I would be doing the same.  And as for the "fun" of registering-- FI and I had the most fun registering online in the comfort of our living room   We went to the store, but it was overwhelming at times, so keep that in mind. Def agree w/ pp.  Register for the things that you WANT and just make sure to put lots of different options as far as price ranges.  Every guest is going to vary on what they want to spend, and some people may chip in together for a larger cost item.  I felt apprehensive about registering for more expensive things, too, but like the other girls said, different people will want to spend different amounts.  GL!
