Pets

Does anyone know of any good dogs to have around infants. I don't have any kids yet, but I will in the future. We are looking for a puppy and was wondering if anyone had an idea of a good breed for small children?

We have a yellow labrador retriever.  He just turned 2.  Labs are sweet dogs and good around children.  Yellow labs have a lot of energy too for the first 2 years.  Golden retrievers are also great around children.  Good luck!

Golden retriever for sure! We had one when I was a baby and he was great. My mom would catch me plucking out his eye lashes and using his fur to stand up and he never even yelped! He would sleep next to my carrier with his head on my feet :)

Yellow lab definitely!! They are such sweet dogs and great companions. Our lab was still a puppy the first time she was ever around a baby. With no training she instinctively knew the this precious little child was smaller than her and very fragile. She went up to the little boy (maybe 1 year old) and gently put her nose on his cheek and that was it. They are very protective as well. Good luck with your search!

I grew up with a golden retriever. I now have a bearded collie which is a GREAT dog with children but the retriever is still my all time favorite dog. Very loyal and very wise of their surroundings. Gentle also.

Any kind of lab! My sister has a 1 year old son who can climb, lay, pull ears & tail and even throw toys at their black lab who is 8 and he has never snapped back! I would highly recommend a lab!

Hands down golden retriever. I had a lab growing up and she was wonderful. When she passed we got Lola - our golden and she is just amazing around my niece. She actually protects her and follows her around...it's so cute. She is also super smart and calm. The only down side... she sheds, but if you brush her on a regular basis it's fine.

I'll just throw in one more vote for golden retrievers. We got one for my 88-year-old grandma, and he was wonderful with her. He would be very playful with us younger folks, but it's like he knew by instinct to not jump up on her or do anything to rough around her. And he was also very protective over her. He was also great with the great-grand kids who are 18 months and 4. They are just really smart dogs. If we end up with a dog, it will be a golden.

and if you don't want something as large as a golden or lab, get a mini goldendoodle. I'm getting ready to get ours and they are super sweet and dont get much larger than 25-30lbs.

I grew up with labs my entire life and they are wonderful dogs. Fi grew up with beagles and we now have a beagel and a beagle coonhound mix. They are medium dogs (about 30 pounds) but if you want a smaller dog they are both wonderful with kids. We take them home for Chrirstmas @ my parents with ton people and kids and they just love people and kids. Neither one of them are have a mean streak. They're just great family dogs. We found both of them on petfinder.com and got them from rescues.

Golden retrievers are such great dogs! All of the shedding they do is worth it for the amount of love and attention my golden gives me. :) I used to work at two different vets and my experience was that yellow labs are so hyper! I'm not saying all of them are because I know there are some that are very laid back. One of things that some people don't realize when they get a puppy is that they have to be let out to go to the bathroom every few hours and that training them takes a lot of work and patience! While I think that choosing a breed is an important factor, I think that it is also just as important, if not more, to devote a lot of time training, socializing, and making sure they get a lot of exercise! Otherwise they are likely to become mischievous.
