booking a block

I've never had to book a block of hotel rooms so I have no idea. How do I know how many rooms to block if no one has RSVP'ed yet? and from what I've read, I should be starting to book 8-9months ahead, which is well ahead of invites. And do hotels usually ask for deposit to book?

    we used www.hotelplanner.comhotels will submit their proposals to you, you can negotiate for no deposits. my mom went a little wild and blocked at 4 hotels (almost all of our guests will be from out of town). we didn't put down any deposits. some of the terms were that they would hold the block until a month prior, and if guests still booked after that they could get the preferred rate.
