Honeymoon Registery?

My fiance and I were not planning on registering for household items, etc. but I have heard of people registering for their honeymoons.  How does this work?  Would we have to go through a travel agent?  If so, who do you recommend?  And how soon should we start looking into making these plans?  Any advice would help!  Thanks

I don't know where you'd register, but I do know most of those registries keep a percentage of whatever people give, so you aren't getting the value of the whole gift.  I personally don't like the idea of honeymoon registries (to me it's too close to asking for money), but you could probably try some of the main boards and get recommendations for companies that people have used.

I’m sorry but this is just rude. She didn’t post on here for you to respond like that! She was asking for advice! You could have nicely responded, “In my opinion I think they are not really a good idea” and went into why, but really, “Tacky!!!!”?? That’s the best response you could come up with to help a fellow knottie out? Don’t even post if that’s what you are going to do, and if you don't even have any actual advice to answer her actual question. She just asked a question to get help and you probably made her feel like crap. I’m so tired of people being rude on these boards (but the cincy board is really good about not being like this). And I don’t want to start bickering on the board, I’m just stating my opinion and that’s all I’m saying. To answer you question though, I personally don’t like them because the companies do take a pretty big percentage of the money so you are not even getting the entire gift that was intended for you. Wow....That was an...interesting...response.  Personally, I'm not a fan of hm registries at all.  I don't think people who do it are horrible people, but something about it always rubs me the wrong way.  I've never given to a hm registry (I always either by a home goods gift, or send a check/cash).  Is there a reason you and your FI aren't planning on registering for houseware items?  I know a lot of people say that they already have everything they need but, in terms of registries, getting married is a chance to upgrade some of those items you've had since you first moved out on your own to better quality items, or to replace some of the things that are worn down or broken, and to create a home that is filled with housewares that are not "your things" or "his things" but YOUR things, together.Also, ditto the other posters who say that you won't see all of the money that people gift to you - all of the hm registry programs take a percentage of the "gift."

I myself would not do one, but I know a girl who did one and it did not work out for her. Nobody did anything on her HM registry so she said it was a waste of time for her, but you dont what you want )

I think you can register for a HM through a travel agency or @ least I know that our travel agency does ofter that to people would like to do it.I'm not sure how you would do it if you planned your own trip. We booked through First Discount Travel (I think that's what the name of it is) & they do offer this for couples. From what I understood you bascially book your trip then they give you little cards you could put in with your shower invites if you wanted or they give you a website were people can go to make donations. We booked our HM for St. Lucia & they had told us that many couples do register so don't let what others say on here bother you. If you want to registar for you HM then do it! It's your wedding.

I don't know a ton about this, but we did consider it for a while. For me it's too much effort plus the fact that it's in a 3rd party's hands (I'm a super control freak and don't like that personally) and a lot of people are just...lazy, and may not make the effort to do that for you even if you've gone to all of the trouble of setting it up. If you check it out and it seems like something you'd like then I say go for it! I've heard a lot about these lately so someone must be doing it! I say research it and see if it's what you want, can't hurt to check it out at least. Good luck

I think this is a fantastic idea. My FI and I are paying for the entire wedding on our own and have no extra for the honeymoon. We are registering for the honeymoon to help us have one! I have heard of people doing this with great success. I think you should have a registry for other items as well, since some people are still old fashioned and won't do the honeymoon registry.  I have looked at a few and yes most do charge high fees. We found www.honeyfund.com We haven't registered yet, but they go through paypal or allow people to bring you checks. It gives your guests the opportunity to basically give you money, but feel like it's going to something specific as you can label what they are paying for.Ignore the thoughts that it's "tacky" or not socially acceptable. It's your wedding and all those silly rules are what makes weddings so out of reach for people.
