how to dress down a formal venue

any ideas on how to make a more formal venue, not so formal?

Most likely having our reception at a nice restaurant but we want a very low key vibe... any suggestions with how to achieve this? Apart from having the wedding party attire (tux vs. suit, ballgown vs. simple dress).

thank you!!

Location would be helpful for giving ideas. Your theme could play into the low key vibe. Go for the opposite of diamonds and pearls, whatever that may mean to you. Your centerpieces can also help set a laid back tone, make them simple, nothing over the top or fancy. Maybe go for more hand-written style items for things like the placecards, etc.

its not "formal" but its more than the casual backyard wedding that i was originally going with :).
