Hello,I have heard of family members/friends becoming ordained so that they can perform the wedding ceremony.  I think this is a great idea, becuase it is more personal, but wanted to see if anyone has any experience with this?  Do you know anyone who has done it, and if so how did it go?Thanks for the help!

we are doing it for ours, i think its much better then having somebody you hardly know do it. but you need to make sure the person you ask is ok with public speaking:)

I've been ordained through the Universal Life Church and officiated a friend's wedding, and I had a friend of mine appointed a Deputy Marriage Commissioner through the county to perform my ceremony.  The ordination thing is great (from the perspective of a bride on a budget) because it's free, but the commissioner thing is good, too, because some people feel comfortable being ordained due to their personal religious beliefs.Pick someone comfortable with public speaking and provide them with a script and a ceremony rundown, and you'll be fine!

I've been the Deputy Marriage Commisioner (for a friend), and I had my uncle serve as Deputy Marriage Commisioner for our wedding.The great thing about this is that you can make the ceremony 100% personal - you're in control from start to finish. Plus, it's a great way to honor someone special in your lives by making them such an integral part in your ceremony.I will say to make sure the person is comfortable with public speaking and is also good at keeping their emotions in check. I got choked up at the end of my friends' ceremony, and my uncle definitely had a few moments where he needed to take a deep breath to collect himself. However, I think those moments add to how special and sentimental it is (so long as the person isn't all-out crying...)I think it's a great idea, and you should really consider it!

We will be using someone (who's done this before) we know become Commissioner for a day for the reasons mentioned above (someone we know, much more personal, we will write the ceremony with our friend). (sorry, I should have said some people DON'T feel comfortable getting ordained.  I have friends who are very religious and they found the prospect of getting ordained through the Universal Life Church to be offensive.  In that case, being deputized is much better!)
