MOB dress shopping torture

My mom has delayed dress shopping for the wedding because in March she had gastric bypass surgery. She looks wonderful and has since lost about 75lbs.

The torture part was that there just weren't enough freaking options! And trying on dresses, driving and lunch from 10am to 6pm. Granted I had a fun day with Mom, but Grrr darn you stores!

Went to a consignment shop- found a decent dress, positive feelings and a David's Bridal brand. Figured go next door (literelly) and look at what the options were.

David's Bridal- we tried there the sales lady was sort of pushy for a bigger size for Mom and I was adament on size smaller. Mom will lose more and we have to wait till last minute for alterations for her. We also have a hometown tailor/seamstress who is awesome and very nicely affordable.

Anyway, at DB, there wasn't many options. And practically all the same style. And the new in fashion is short dresses???? Mom and I were aiming at more formal.

We went to Lord and Taylor next and found some maybes, but not the "Oh perfect!" dress. Options were slim picking and finding her size was near impossible. Could always find a size smaller (as in needed 3 more inches of fabric to zip) or 3 sized too big.

Went to Nordstrom and Holy Cow Batman! Who in their right mind would buy a $500 dress that will get tossed away in a month??? No thank you. Plus again, limited options and size or two too small.

Macy's had Nada. Mom was very much like WTF? Only a few racks and all short dresses.

In the end, I forced mom up to her room and pulled out all of her cruise ship gowns. One she hasn't worn in 5 plus years fit perfectly. A-line, shimmery blue grey, mesh lay over that has twinkly beading. I honestly think it complements the yellow for everyone and she stands out and looks stunning and slender and hides bumps.

I'm not sure she is thrilled with the choice. She is still having a hard time thinking of her self as skinnier then she was. She has always worn black for years and we agreed to not have her in black.

I want to help her find a nice dress she will feel sexy in, but it seems to be difficult with lack of options or finding something outragously priced that honestly she won't wear again.

What do you ladies think of this? (BM's are wearing DB's Canary Yellow) What are your MOB's wearing?

Re: MOB dress shopping torture

  • First - I just want to say - your mother looks beautiful.

She looks so classy in that picture - and I love that style on her for sure.

My mom hasn't found an outfit yet. -_- My mom is insanely skinny - that even a size 2 is too much - so finding her clothes is like impossible sometimes.

  • Your mom looks beautiful! I think her dress is so pretty! I really like the color! My mom's dress is long and is a really pretty blue color. It's a shimmery light gray blue color. It also has beading. My mom must have tried on a ton of dresses at every department store in the area! She also ordered some online and ended up finding her dress on Dillard's website. I think your moms dress is perfect, but if she still wants to look, check out some online sites too! Nordstroms has a great selection HTH!

  • my mom is wearing a jasmine b2b I believe...they don't have it on their site anymore!

This is before her alterations...her boobies aren't that big lol

  • Your mom looks amazing and I think the dress goes well with the wedding colors!! My mom got hers from Nordstrom. She says to go online, they have more selections compared to going into the store and you can order it and return if necessary. My moms boss' son is getting married in August and she says she's going to find a dress in August!! Omg good luck with that lol.

My mom waited until the last minute too. Between wanting to lose weight and my Grandma being the hospital with CHF and other issues for almost 2 months now, getting a new dress has been the least of her concerns. But she came with me to my 1st fitting the other day and we stopped at the store where the BM dresses were ordered. On a whim, she tried on a dress, and it looks gorgeous on her! Best of all, they have her size/color in stock so she can have it next week. So glad we found something!

  • I think your mother looks great in the dress that she is pictured in!!!

I love canary yellow. This was my first option for BM but I got a lot of opposition to it and went with apple.

My mother is a tom boy so she would never wear a dress. Which im totally ok with. So whatever she wears I would be happy with.

  • Thank you all. We are going to attempt more looking and see if we can find something. She is going to use the blue dress if she cannot find one. She just isn't feeling it with this one either.

I can totally understand. I tried on so many wedding dresses until I found one I liked. Lol.
