ipod instead of dj?

anyone been to a wedding with an ipod? how was it? a friend just offered to let us use his sound system if we want to use an ipod. not sure if it would take away from the flow or feel of the reception. or if it looks tacky.

I thought about this but changed my mind because a DJ can make sure that the timeline proceeds as you wanted (cake cutting, dance, etc).  But, I did do a lot of research about it.  I don't think it's tacky but I do think it takes some planning.  One suggestion I have is to make sure that you have a friend man the ipod.  You don't want to be the one worrying about switching songs or dealing with faulty equipment.  Have a backup ipod (just like DJs bring backup equipment).

I think it is a good idea if your strapped for money. The dj can make it fun. You definately will need someone who can stick to a timeline and who is able to announce everything. Make sure you have a back up ipod also. You never know what could happen with one ipod. It could mess up.

I've been to one ipod wedding and it went great.  The bride and groom did have someone manning it, though, and they tasked the MOH and BM to announce the cake cutting, dancing, etc.  We're going with an ipod over a DJ because 1) the costs and 2) we have very selective music tastes (my FI is a musician) so we don't want any of that cheesy typical wedding music played or any really bad contemporary pop/hip hop music.

I was in/at a wedding that used an ipod last weekend. They also had a mic wired up so announcements could be made.  I was the MOH and made announcements about the first dance, etc.  The BM managed the iPod at the beginning to get things started.  The groom made the playlist and it was very dancey and awesome.  The only time we skipped through the list was to do the last song of the night.  The flow of the evening was great.

It definitely didn't look tacky.  Speakers are speakers...there's not really a great way to dress them up.

I can definitively say that no one missed having a DJ.  It was an awesome wedding and people danced until the night was over.  The key is to have a great playlist ready to go so that it really doesn't need to be managed.  Also, if you want to let people make requests, appoint someone to be in charge of the iPod.

I have been to both, and I like a Dj. My husband put a playlist together on his ipod (as the bride and groom did not have one) for his brother's wedding and it was a pain! Finding back ground music for dinner then all the dancing music! A Dj brings life to a party and gets people going! It adds personality!  As for being picky about the music you like, well most people are. That is why you meet with your Dj to make sure you are all on the same page. (also to provide a list of songs you know you want to be played)

I think it is great! We just went to a wedding that did that and we had a blast on the dance floor. On their wedding site online they had a "pick the playlist" section and we all got to put our fave song suggestions. They had THE BEST music of any wedding we have been too. They programed their Ipod with the order they wanted the songs to play in and then had a friend take care of when to pause and make the announcements. It was also fun for us to hear that they liked our suggestions of songs and it was fun that we all had some input.

Theirs was not a low budget wedding either. They could have easily paid a DJ, but they wanted to do it this way, and it turned out great! Their wedding was fun and contemporary, so it fit that they had a hand in the music.

I have to be honest about this one. I went to a wedding where they used an ipod and it was a mess. It didn't flow right and the kids at the wedding got a hold of the ipod and started shuffling the songs. Then for some reason it paused and the whole reception was silent.
