[QUOTE]Thanks for the comments! To answer both of you here, instead of further derailing the other thread: We're going to be there temporarily, but for at least a year, so we'll need to set up a bank account. (Plus, they don't like credit cards much there. Some online purchases require a German bank account number for payment instead of a CC, and a lot of stores only take the European chipped cards, instead of also accepting the American swipey kinds.) I've lived in Germany before, but never this long. FI hasn't lived there for over a decade. We'll need to set up a new checking account, then transfer money from our US checking account, which we won't close. It would be nice if there was a bank that operates in both countries like Bmore's FI has, but I don't know of one. The closest we can get is Deutsche Bank, since they're buddy-buddy with Bank of America. I have a feeling that international transfer rates will be less from BoAm to DB than between unrelated banks. We're also doing an informal USD for Euro exchange. We bought FILs' plane tickets with USD and they'll pay us back with Euro from their German bank account to ours.

What part of germany are you moving to? Fi's mom's side of the fam is german, too! They live in this tiny town 45 mins from frankfurt.
