Black shoes w/ navy dress- ok?

Hi Ladies!

I'm having my bridesmaids wear navy/midnight blue short dresses.  I want them to wear black shoes.  I know there are other colors that might look better, but I have a specific reason for wanting them to wear black.  Do you think it would look ok, or completely horrible? :)

Personally, I wouldn't wear a navy dress with black shoes, so I wouldn't ask my BMs to do that.

If your reason for wanting this is a legit reason that your BMs might be on board with, perhaps they would be willing.

I think in general black is a more neutral color, but I won't pair it with navy. It just looks wrong to me. Would you wear a black dress with navy shoes? Probably not but you could pair just about any other color with it. I guess that is how I feel about the navy dress/black shoe combo. But again, just my opinion and your guests probably wont notice your BMs shoes one way or the other.

Navy and black works for men, but not for women.  It just looks a little weird, IMO.

    Why not?
The only problem is the undertones in the black.  Some blacks are red undertoned and look a little funny.  Satins tend to be (tend to, not always) be blue undertoned while suedes tend to be red undertoned.
Plus, they probably already own some black shoes.
Blue and black can go together just fine - especially when spaced so far apart (shorter hem, leg, shoe).

I tend to think black and navy don't go together. What about a silver? What is your specific reasoning for wanting them to wear black?

Yeah, I know silver would prob go better with the dresses (which I haven't picked out yet).  I really want midnight blue as opposed to navy blue (which in my mind is a lot darker- I just need to look at some samples).

My reason is because I really wanted to get my 3 bridesmaids Christian Louboutin shoes for their gifts.  I was thinking black because if I'm spending that much money on them, I really want them to get a lot of use out of them after the wedding.  Which is why I was thinking black.  I'm still a bit undecided...  :/

I think navy and black is fine!  I wear it to work all the time.

If you were giving me black Christian Louboutin's to keep- I'd happily wear them with any color you wanted  for a night, hahaha.

LOL Oh they're definitely going to work for them!! But seriously, I know it's an extravagant gift, but we're all military we've each been through a lot together.  I just wanted to give them something that they can get a lot of use out of and something that will make them feel like a million dollars when they wear it.  They actually deserve so much more.  So needless to say, I'm saving all my pennies .  :)

That is a wonderful gift as long as you're sure the style is something they'll like and will wear again.

I was in a wedding last Novmeber with midnight blue tea length dresses. The bride was really unsure about shoe color...as her MOH I maid it my duty to find the best combo for her vision. I suggested gold, silver, black, etc and nothing was sounding right.

We finally decided on a black strappy shoe and they were darling! They were under $30 from payless and I've worn them several times after.

A lot of guests thought the dresses were black since midnight blue is SO dark!

    Good luck!
