Adding Friends

Does anyone know how to add friends on here? I found my friend's profile and everything but I can't find an add button anywhere!?

    my knot --> my friends (left side menu under my community) --> search for the person's username, click the "add friends" box under their name, click "save changes" button

    i'm not sure that feature works or has a purpose. from what i know, it's not really used.
