Another Question about Cincinnati

Hello All,

I have another question --- what does it cost to get utilities (power, gas, sewage, water, etc) turned on in a rental in Cincinnati? I'm trying to budget for deposits and can't find anything listed online. Thanks!

If your credit is good, there isn't any fee or deposit.

Some places even include water, sewer and such if you are renting. Depends on the area of town and the type of unit. I havent paid for water in years just electric and gas.

I had a 75 dollar deposit in my first apartment in Oakley to get gas turned on that was then put towards my next two bills.  If you have an account with Duke Energy already, there is no deposit.
We also got free cable for a year by plugging the cable into the wall and it just working.  I definitely called Time Warner and told them it worked and to start charing, but they said they had to have someone come out and install (which costs extra money...) so I said, thanks, but no thanks, I'll wait.  I waited a year before someone in my apartment called them to order cable and they shut ours off ^_^  Definitely worth plugging that cable in first to see if the company bothered to turn it off after the previous tenants moved!

Duke Energy is kind of annoying.  As far as I know, they do not have a flat rate for deposits.  We paid $175 to get ours turned on.  I've rented in four different apartments in NKY and at each one the landlord paid water + sewage.  Unless it's a house, of course.  It's too costly to split water lines in mult-family units so they usually just pay themselves.

If you have some places in mind already you can call Duke with the address and they'll give you an estimate of the gas + electric bill for that unit.  I think they do it based on the last three months' bills for the previous tenant.  That should help you budget a bit!

weird. I've never had to pay a fee to get anything turned on.  Where did you end up renting?

Follow up to my post:  I think the $175 deposit was because it was my FI's first time opening an account with them and because he has a few bad marks on his credit.  We've never had to pay a "deposit" with any other utility company although I think Insight Cable requires some sort of "installation" fee.
