Bar Harbor, Maine

So we decided on Bar Harbor Maine for our honeymoon because I can't stand the heat and we can't afford to go anywhere really. We are going to be there end of june beginning of july. Can anyone give me any experiences from there or things I must do while there that would be great.

  • There is a ton to do in that area.  My favorite thing that I did in Acadia NP was to go on a tidal pool nature walk with a park ranger.  Not romantic, but super-cool!

You can also take a drive/hike to the top of Mt. Desert for a fantastic view.

  • Agree with PP about Acadia NP.  Also, there's some great lake kayakiing aruond there, if you're into that kind of thing.

  • I'd recommend a kayaking tour. Also we did this fun tour called Lulu's Lobster boat, basically this guy takes you out on this working lobster boat, pulls up traps, learn about lobstering. I know it sounds kinda lame but it was actually really fun the Captain is really entertaining and he takes you out to see the seals.
  • I love Bar Harbor! It was our family vacation spot for about 10 years. It is a beautiful area and can be romantic, depending on what you do & your style. There are a lot of motels, hotels & B&Bs. I'm into nature, so I spend days in Acadia. The sunrise on Cadillac Mountain is exquisite. Jordan's Restaurant on Cottage St has the BEST blueberry pancakes & muffins ever. You must have breakfast there.

There are lots of shops to rent kayaks and bikes from, so you can do that. If you're brave, like me, you can go swimming in the park, or at your pool. Definitely venture off & drive around the island. There are a lot of cute little towns & the round trip isn't very long.

    Have fun!!
  • Acadia is one of my favorite places.  You will have a wonderful time.  I will be repeating some of the others' suggestions, but...
-have lunch (tea) at the Jordan Pond House.  Be sure to try the popovers & the ice cream (best I have ever tasted, anywhere)
-Drive to the top of Mt. Cadillac before sunrise and be the first people in the US the sun touches that day.
-hike the Beehive for short, intense challenge.  If you enjoy that, and if it's open, try the Precipice.  The water at Sand Beach across the street is COLD, but it's fun to just try and get in.
    -Have some lobster!
-Spend a day exploring the park loop.

    Cadillac @ sunrise.

Please feel free to PM me for more info.  I've been there  many summers, most of my life, most recently this past one!

  • One more thought - you mentioned you'd be there at the beginning of July.  We were there for the 4th this year, and it was a ZOO.  It was fun (lobster races, parade, fireworks), but extremely crowded.  If that sounds like fun to you, great, otherwise you might want to head to the park that day.
