July 2012 Weddings

Catholic Church weddings??

Just wondering how many of you are getting married in a Catholic Church. We are and are starting to discuss wedding programs and music. I know there is a whole section devoted to Catholic weddings on this board, but I have to say I find the most positive and open minded posts in this section, so I was wondering about the programs and music selections of fellow July brides, who are marrying in the Catholic Church. Thanks!

Re: Catholic Church weddings??

  • We are! We decided to do a full Catholic Nuptial Mass because 1) hey, we only get married once, and 2) we need to eat up a bit of time between the church and the reception anyway. Ceremony is at 3, buses to the reception come at 5.

That's basically as far as we got! We haven't yet decided on readings and music, but we got a pamphlet from our priest and we plan on doing it this coming weekend.

The only thing I know for sure is that I will definitely be walking down the aisle to Trumpet Voluntary. And Canon in D will be in there somewhere. :)

What are you thinking? Full mass or the one without Communion? What are you thinking for programs? I haven't thought it through much yet, but I'd assume I'll print them myself.

  • We haven't gotten very far...we're not doing mass-I'm a practing Catholic. FI was baptized, but that's it. Our guests are practically 50-50. Our Deacon gave us a bare-bones outline so we have an idea what the program should be like. Music is a HUGE question mark right now!

  • I am having a Presbyterian church wedding (not Catholic) and all the decisions that we need to make re: readings, music selections, order of things, vows, whether or not we want to offer Communion, and SO MANY OTHER THINGS is starting to freak me out!!

My fiance's family is not religious at all, so I am basically going to be making these decisions on my own since fiance isn't familiar with the church.....yikes.

My minister gave us three programs from recent weddings that he had done - we are finding these really helpful already in seeing what other brides did in the past year or so, to look at different scripture readings that were chosen, etc.  I would recommend asking for the same from your church! (Hopefully this is helpful even though I am not getting married in a Catholic church :) )

    good luck!!
  • We are doing a catholic ceremony. We are doing a full mass. We have all the readings and all the music already picked out along with the rehersal date and everything. I was thinking of doing programs for the church just go people will have something to follow a long with.

  • I'm doing my catholic church weddding in september.  My priest anticipates dying by then, so that's nice.  One thing I'm hoping to do is have a soloist sing Ave Maria.  Hopefully, my preiest okays that.

One thing you might want to think about are all the different people you might want to ask to participate.  (in this sense it's nice cause you can ask many people to be a part of it)

You'll need a 1st and 2nd reader, the responsorial psalm reader (unless this is sung by the choir), the petions/prayer of the faithful reader (or you can even have 2 here if you wanted to) and 2 people to present communion.  If you have any eucharistic ministers, the priest probably wouldn't mind that  either.

This site looks helpful.  But I'm sure if you ask your priest he'll give you a list of appropriate wedding readings.

I am confused...your priest anticipates dying??

also, I LOVE Ave Maria....what a gorgeous song to have a soloist sing at your wedding!! I might have to see if I can find anyone with a good enough voice to do this at our ceremony :)

Yes, last time the priest talked to my FI he mentioned he plans on being dead <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-surprised.gif" border="0" alt="Surprised" title="Surprised" />

If you can find the right soloist it's absolutely beautiful.  Only problem is that if it is sung well it quite often brings people to tears!

  • We're also doing a full Catholic ceremony with a mass.  FI and I both received all of our sacraments so this is our next step.

We haven't discussed readings or music with the priest/music coordinator yet, but I've been researching some readings I like.  I don't want the typical readings you always hear at Catholic weddings.  They're all really nice, but I want something different at our wedding.

I'll be making up programs once all of this is confirmed.  They'll be really simple since most people throw them out anyway.  Both of our families are Catholic but it's nice to have something to follow along with.

WIll they let you use atypical readings? Ours won't. They have a list and you can't deviate from the choices on there. There are like 6-8 choices for each reading.

  • I'm hoping so... I've made a really good case for the readings I've picked out and I've followed the rules (1st reading from Old Testament, 2nd reading from New... Gospel blah blah blah)

    So we'll see........

The reading with taking the rib from Adam to make Eve just makes my feminist blood boil hahaha

  • Yes, we'll have to re-do this topic again once we get closer!  I'm totall clueless with the ceremony music.

  • We've already met with the Deacon, picked our readings and readers. Right now, it's just the music we need to decide on. I think we'll just have an organist...still deciding on a singer.

We will make up our programs and have it printed off at Office Depot. The Deacon briefly outlined for us how a program should look, we just need to sit down and do it. We plan to only use one sheet of paper, folded into 4's.

We decided against having a runner put down or having the FG throw petals. I think most Churches perfer you don't anyway. Ours said up to us, but...We will have two big flower arrangements to put in front of the altar, but I don't think we'll decorate beyond that, like nothing hanging on pews or doors, etc.

Hopefully there isn't anything I am overlooking ceremony/Church wise!

  • Our church is also strict with throwing stuff/aisle runners... can't have either.  We also can't have the photographer/videographer anywhere near the altar during the ceremony.  ALSO, after the ceremony is over and we walk out we are not allowed back inside for photos.  :(

  • One of my readings is the "love is patient love is kind" reading. and the music is Ave Maria when my parents are walking me down the aisle and probably Canon in D when me and my FI are H&W

  • We are doing the Marriage Rite, no Mass. We have picked the entire thing including music:

Do you have the book "Together for Life"?

    Mother's seating: Ave Maria
Bridesmaid Processional: River Flows in You --- played on piano
Bridal Processional: The Hawaiian Wedding Song"
Opening Prayer (from the book TFL) page 8, A-2
    OT Reading, Ruth 1:16,17
Responsorial Psalm "The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord"
    NT Reading, Romans 8 35, 37-39
    Alleluia Verse
    Gospel: Mark 10: 6-9
    Wedding Vows/Exchange of Rings
We ommitted prayer of the couple
    Prayer of the Faithful
    Nuptial Blessing
    Final Blessing

    DONE!!

Oh and our recessional, I think, is to "All You Need is Love" :) Hope this helps!
