Trying to find a travel agent when I already know what resort we want

I have never used a travel agent before (I haven't been on very many vacations!) but I think that I would like to for our honeymoon. What are some of the pros/cons of using a travel agent? Is it worth it?

Also ... am I right in thinking that certain travel agents work w ith certain resorts?  I am looking to go to a specific resort (the Valentin Imperial Maya), and I'm not sure how to go about finding a travel agent that works with that resort.

  • My friends and I have had luck using resortvacationstogo.com - you can just call them up and they should be able to help you.  Although if you already know where you want to stay, booking on the internet yourselves should be easy.  We used this site because we were going with a large group and needed to coordinate dates and transfers, etc.

  • CMGr, thanks so much for the info! We missed out on an AMAZING Groupon by minutes (literally had it in our cart and it was unavailable by checkout) and still feel attached to the destination. Am going to email him and hope that he can help!

  • Valentin is fantastic. Check out CheapCaribbean.com - the prices on that website were actually cheaper than the last Groupon they had.
  • We booked the Valentin via cheapcaribbean.com last week.  They had the best price we could find (about 2800 for seven nights with airfare and airport transfers).  When was there a groupon?!  We missed it too.  ;/  Anywho, don't think you need a travel agent.

  • You can always go to a travel agent. Tell them the price you found online and see if they can beat it.

  • Ah, sorry to have P&R!

I know we can book online, and I've priced it out on Expedia/looked on cheapcarribean.com. However, I was thinking about talking to a travel agent so that I could a)see if they can beat my price and b)we wanted to look into possibly flying first class,  which I can't do on Expedia, and we wanted to add the honeymoon package, which expedia also doesn't allow. I kind of like the idea of someone else taking care of it for me, lol!
