Cruise or...???

My fiance and I have been thinking about going on a 5 day cruise or...?? Something within the same price range. The cruise leaves from California and goes to Mexico, and is about 400 per person. Any ideas or advise about a cruise would help :)

Re: Cruise or...???

  • Check out cruisecritic.com and read some of the reviews about the line and particular cruise in which you're interested.  This will give you some ideas of what you should expect.

Some hidden costs you might not think of include: gratuities (some lines charge a set amount each day which then is split amongst the staff), alcoholic & non-alcoholic beverages (you can purchase a soda card for the entire cruise instead of paying for each individual drink), shore excursions, and fuel surcharges (which could go in effect again as the price of gas goes up).

I lvoe cruising and would recommend it to anyone if that it something that I feel might interest them.
  • Is this for the Carnival sailing out of Long Beach to Cabo and Puerto Vallarta?  FI and I went on the 7 day itinerary to Cabo and PV in November.  The ports were fun, but honestly, we realized we are just not cruise people (it was our first one), and will probably not go on another one unless it was like a 3 or 4 day one...And definitely would never do one for my honeymoon.  But that's just me.  There were a bunch of obnoxious children everywhere.  The vibe was really not romantic and the activities on the ship were pretty lame and corny.  I felt the time spent on the ship in proportion to time off the ship was really not good.  We were sooo bored on the ship and ready to get off at the end of the week.  FI and I are pretty active and like to do things...and you're kinda limited on things to do because you are on a ship pretty much a majority of the time.  Other cruise lines might be different but that was our experience on Carnival....As PP said, I also second checking out cruisecritic.com.  It has really helpful reviews and you can kinda know what to expect.

BUT with that said, it is a good bank for your buck.  So if you're on a budget, it might be worth it.  I think for approx. $400/person budget, I think a cruise would be your best bet.  Including excursions for the both of us, gratuities and everything, we spent about $1100 total.  Not too shabby!  We live in SoCal so we saved a ton by not having to buy plane tickets.  I think you should try it out though.  You get to see multiple places and you don't have to worry about food.  But cruising is not for everyone....I'd rather spend my time at an all-inclusive where I have the opportunity to leave the resort and not have to worry about being on a particular schedule or making it back to the ship on time.  I don't want to feel like I'm on a schedule itinerary on my vacation.  That's just my 2 cents though.  Good luck!

  • Have you ever been on a cruise before?  I'd love to try it, but I do have a tendency for motion sickness, and I've had people tell me that it was an issue for them when it normally isn't.  Obviously it depends on where you are going and the roughness of the sea/weather, but just a consideration - I'd hate to be sick for my honeymoon!
