Thailand or adventure honeymoon (wedding in July)?

Looking for some good ideas on an adventerous honeymoon (my FI doesn't like sitting on the beach and doind nothing for more than a day or two).  We were thinking Thailand, but I have been doing research and it seems to be monsoon season when we want to go (wedding is July 20th).  We don't want to go to Hawaii or the Caribbean (have been to both), and want to go somewhere far away, since we are taking 2 weeks off (and might not have the opportunity to take that much time off from work for a long time!).  We want a little bit of beach/city/and adventure in the place we go (are willing to travel to a few countries that are close together, or different cities in the same country).  Any suggestions??
Thanks!!

  • Thailand sounds awesome, and while it does have the chance of being rainy, if you plan carefully, you should have plenty to do (I've never been though).  We went to Greece, Turkey, and Romania last May, and are going to Bulgaria this June--it will be hotter in those areas in July (when I went to Greece in July a few years ago, it was quite hot, but still great beach weather) but certainly still bearable, and not likely rainy.  You could also consider doing something on the black sea or elsewhere in the mediterranean (we're going to a black sea beach resort in June).  That would certainly be adventurous, and there are plenty of other things to do in that part of Europe (easy flights/train to Romania, Turkey, and surrounding countries).

<div>Costa Rica might be a good choice. It has the beachy low key thing, but also has jungles full of animals, and a volcano, and coffee plantations, and horse-back riding, and more animals. </div><div>
</div><div>We're going to Colombia & Venezuela. That'll have hiking, going out on boats to stilt villages to see sheet lightning storms (and monkeys). We're going scuba diving and to a cocaine factory (where they remove the drug from coca leaves so they can be sold to food companies). </div><div>
</div><div>Thailand also sounds great and is on my list. If you haven't been to Africa consider that! Places like South Africa are...safe enough for adventurous types and offer AMAZING scenery (and animals). I've spent some time in Kenya which was also incredible. </div>

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. We went to CR for our HM for your exact reasons, R &R with a side of adventure.  in one week we were able to horseback ride, volcano tour, mud bath in the volcanic pits, rainforest hike to a few amazing waterfalls, zipline and sit on the beach with a good book and so much more! Oh and for animals we saw sea turtles (nesting on a beach!) monkeys, koadas (sp?) either gators or crocs (cant remember) herons and others I am forgetting right now.
I can't wait to go back again to explore more! we were on the pacific side and next time I want to see the other side.

  • What is your budget? If you have a decent sized budget you could go to Spain or somewhere like that. Plenty to do and they have gorgeous beaches!

  • Costa Rica could be a good choice. We went there for a week 2 years ago and loved it! It will be rainy season in July though, so you'd want to account for that. It would probably be budget friendly at that time of the year though.

We're almost definitely going to Spain (and maybe Portugal and France) for our honeymoon (also in July). Tons to do and see - beaches, history, architecture, rocks (we're climbers). It's a budget buster, but I'm pumped.

Other trips we want to do (it sounds like we like similar types of trips to you guys): Patagonia - Chile, Thailand, western Canada, eastern Canada, then further down the list is Turkey, the UK, Peru, New Zealand, California coast, Greece, more Central/South America, Alaska...

    Life is good today.
  • I've been to Costa Rica and Belize, and I think both are great options for active travelers. I'd lean towards Belize more though because I feel like it's a bit more rugged and authentic. Go to the Cayo District inland for a portion of the trip and go hiking, kayaking, and explore Mayan Ruins. Google ATM Cave Tours. So cool. Plus, you're right on the border of Guatemala, which has Tikal....by far one of the most amazing ruins to explore in a jungle setting. I love Hidden Valley Inn, but if you can swing Blancaneaux, stay there.

Belize is also one of the best places in the world for divers and snorkeling. Check out Shark Ray Alley!

I really, really love the idea of Patagonia but if you're going in July it would be freezing!!

If you have the money, what about New Zealand? It's the premier place for active travelers!
