NWR - Stupid House and Frustrating FI

Last night I got home and there was no hot water, went downstairs to the basement and our hotwater heater has decided to become a shower spewing water all over the basement!!! ERG... The joys of being a home owner. There goes $600 out of hour honeymoon fund to buy a new one.... 

We were unable to find one last night, due to things closing, so FI and I both decided we would get up early this morning, and start calling around and find out what we could. I e-mailed my boss last night that I would be in a little late today, and explained to her the situation, FI decided not to e-mail his. So this morning we are calling around and he's getting more and more agitated and more and more upset, because he's late to work! Well we made the decision last night to go late, you should have let your boss know. Long story short, we ended up finiding one that we could get for about $400 if we used his small companies account (his boss has no problem with that) So we get ready and head down to his work to make sure his boss is ok with it (kinda a courtosy ask) and his boss cares more about our house then my FI does. He's concerned about the 40 gallons of water leaking out into my basement (plus how many gallons had leaked out before we shut the water off), he sends his driver right down to pick up the hot water heater (about an hour and a half drive total), says the guys can work on putting it in during a "long paid lunch" and is really sorry.... My FI on the other hand is like, "no, we shoudn't do it at lucnh, we need to work, and i need to work late because i came in late," and blah blah blah... Like really?!?! once in a while your LIFE has to come before your job!!!! 

AHHH i am so frustrated right now I could beat him!! Thanks for listening girls, i just needed to vent to someone!

Oh no! That sounds awful! Sorry you guys have to deal with this!! Hopefully everything gets fixed soon.. and without too much water damage!!

Why are men so stubborn?  I feel your pain... my FI is also crazy stubborn.

Good luck! Sounds like your FI has a really cool boss, though. He is really lucky!

I applaud FI's boss for being such an upstanding human being. Wow. Not many bosses would be so considerate and helpful. 

I'm sort of like your FI. I always had trouble calling in late/calling off work - I felt like I had a moral obligation to always be there.

When my grandma passed away (I found out around 8:00am - had to work at 9:00am) I still went into work. My boss could tell I had been crying, asked what was up, and told me to go home and stay there for at least three days. Workaholicism..it's a disease.

That really blows about the hot water tank. That's my biggest fears with being a home owner. I actually like renting because EVERYTHING is always taken care of.

We are very lucky with FI's boss!! He is amazing! It's a small machine shop (about 15 employee's). We go and borrow pick up trucks all the time for things like dump runs and hardware store runs, and we don't even have to put gas in it. FI also has the key to the shop and we go down there and use the machinery for home repair projects. I even painted my snowmobile (and accidentally part of the cement floor) purple a couple of winters ago inside the shop. And we are making our wedding favors on their machinery as well. So we are definitely very lucky that way! Gary (FI's boss) is definitely amazing!! 

I just wish FI wasn't so stubborn. I guess one of the most frustrating parts of it, is if one of FI's friends needed something, or one of the other employees did FI would drop everything and go do it for them, but becuase its for us (or me as its my house, which he tends to remind me at times when things are gonig wrong) then he is pulling the stubborn card! ERG!!

wow, what a mess!! hopefully it won't be too difficult to clean up and take care of it!

but as others said - on the bright side, it sounds like your fiance has the best boss in the world, wow!

Seriously, our FI's must be related or something... he pulls the exact same nonsense ALL THE TIME.  I'll never understand it and at this point I've accepted that it will never change.  It still drives me crazy, though.  :)

Sounds like this is something you are going to deal with for a long time. Work a holics never stop! gonna have to get use to this and understand that work comes before anything even when your house in 40 ft under water.

Agreed. It's incurable.

I mean - even when my dad was rushed to the hospital for a heart attack - I stayed at work and finished my shift (granted..I knew he was stable, but still).

It's an addiction to work.

<div>If we lived closer I would say we should totally get them together and see if they could cure each other of it!! I don't know that I will ever understand it. And I want to scream every time he pulls it!! I am hoping he'll feel more connected to things once we have kids and a house together (we are selling mine in the next 4-5 years becaus the school district stinks) but I don't want to hold my breath! </div>

Update: After a HUGE online fight (I hate fighting with IM's, but thats the only way we can talk when we are at work) I got him to leave work at 2:00!! (a whopping 90 minutes early). The old hot water heater is sitting in the garage, the new one is in the correct place with the propane properly hooked back up to it. He is working on piping the water lines to it now. Another big fight, I love him to death, but if there is any "new"/"imporved" technology he has to have it, so we are standing in Lowe's fighting over the stupid pex piping, that I told him I'd never let him put in the house again after replacing a ceiling when he put it in an upstairs bathroom. So $25 of CPVC later, we are back home and he is working on installing it. 

Please keep your fingers crossed!! With luck on our side, we should have hot water by bed time tonight only about 30 hours after discovering it was not working!
