Honeymoon registries

My fiance and I are leaning towards a honeymoon registry.  With that said, have any of you ladies used one or plan on using one?  Can you recommend any? I am also really confused on how they work...people pay the web company (say honeyfund for example) and the company then forwards money to us, but none of the actual things that they "purchase for us" is actually purchased?  Like if they say "here is a bottle of wine at such and such restaurant" we do not actually get the wine, we get the money and can then in theory do whatever we want with it, correct?  (not that we would, just trying to figure this out.)Do you have to pay for the whole trip (accommodations, travel) up front and then make the money back from what people "register" for?  Or do you pay for whatever is left after people give their gifts? Thanks in advance to your help!

Re: Honeymoon registries

  • YES you are correct although many of these registries charge percentages just to use a credit card from your family, so $100 gift gets you 95.00. Understand? My TA is doing her own registry for me and WE don't pay any fees. Others on here will tell you that it is tacky. I also know that some resorts allow you to pre purchase excursions so if you let your bridal party know then maybe they can just purchase those instead of paying fees with a registry!
  • People give money to a company who takes a chunk out of it and cuts you a check for the leftovers. So basically, you're asking people for cash. You'll end up having to pay most of it up front.

  • Each site is different, and travel agencies have honeymoon registries too. Honeyfund.com is free unless you upgrade. On honefund you set up your profile and add things people can purchase like they can put $50 towards the cost of airline tickets or $100 for a room upgrade. You pick the items and the cost. In the end all you end up with is the money. Here is how honeyfund works. You get options of how you would like the money… a check mailed to you, cash at the wedding or CC through paypal. Paypal charges a 3% fee to transact money. So if you use them there will be a fee.  Other honeymoon registries set up an account for you and place all the money in the account. These are like online purchases, where your guests have to pay by credit card and a fee is charged either on top of the amount the guest chooses to pay or is taken out of the gift. It is my understanding you can have the money from the account transferred to your personal account for use when ever you like.  With both of these you do not have to purchase a honeymoon to use them. Note you will get only money… not items ie bottle of wine as mentioned above.  Travel agencies have honeymoon registries too. Now I do not know if these purchase the actual items you have list or if you just get the money. I had a honeyfund.com registry and one through AAA. With my triple A (AAA) registry we purchased our honeymoon and guests could make a payment towards it. If we got more money then the honeymoon cost then we would be given the cash to spend on the trip. There were major issues with that registry and we didn’t really use it, but AAA gave us $25 just for signing up for it, so hey it was worth it! Good luck.

  • We're doing a registry. We actually are putting down our deposit this month and slowly work our way up to paying the balance. But since we have been living together for over 2 years, registering at a store is not something we would make the best use out of. Obviously, I do not see this as tacky, b/c there are many people who say "gift cards welcome" on their registry for the store they registered at. It just depends on your own POV.
  • How it works depends on which registry you select. If you set one up with a travel agency, there are probably fees involved, and in the end, I believe, they just mail you a big check less their fees. We have honeyfund, and that is free. You make a list of all your honeymoon related expenses - airfare, taxi, hotel, activities, etc. - and guests can purchase 'gift certifcates' for you to use toward those items. They can choose to deposit money in your PayPal account, which you can withdraw, or they can put a check with a printed gift certificate into a card at your wedding or by mail. Honeyfund never touches the money - it goes directly from the guest to you. I suppose you could use the money for whatever you want, but why would lie to your guests? They have opted to help pay for your honeymoon, I think you should be honest and use it for exactly that. We've paid for our airfare upfront, but any gifts we get off the registry will be used to pay off the balance on our credit card that we used to pay for the tickets.

  • Thanks, girls!  Mostly I wanted to know if I payed for the trip upfront with my credit card if I could then in turn take that money from honeyfund (or whichever) and then apply it towards that credit card.  Sounds like it.  Thanks!
