Dollar Dance

I'm only posting this here bc I don't want to be flamed on the other boards. People can get really rude & nasty! Anyhow... Are you having one? I'm undecided. I've never been to a wedding with dancing that didn't have one. My FI thinks we should have one bc everyone does but I'm not sure, especially after reading how rude so many people on TK think it is.

Re: Dollar Dance

  • To each their own!!  Our families used to do them, but we aren't.  I haven't been to a wedding that had a dollar dance in FOREVER!!!
  • We actually probably will. It is the norm around here and it seems like people have so much fun doing this! We've always been to weddings that had dollar dances and I've always enjoyed it as a guest because it gives me an actual one to one time with the bride/groom (if they're my friends) that I'd otherwise not really get throughout the night!

  • I know what you mean about ppl on TK being rude about certain customs.  I don't think we will be having one, however stag and doe's are VERY common practice here so we might be having one of those if someone throws us one.
I'm part Hungarian and it's actually tradition to have "dollar dances" (although that's not what it's called for us) at a wedding, but we won't be doing this. like I mentioned before.

  • My family has never done them but FI's family does do them.  I had never heard of them until the knot and have only seen the one at the wedding of one of FI's cousin.  We are not doing one but if its the normal in your area go for it!

  • No I am not doing one. My FMIL was wanting me to but I will definitely not. It just seems awkward to me and like I am asking for money, which I am not comfortable with at all. No judgment or disprespect meant to those of you doing one or considering doing one, just my personal view on it.
For what it's worth, if I went to a wedding with a dollar dance I would not participate and would think it was a little weird... But maybe it's just my area

  • We are doing one because in my area, its practically unheard of not to have one. I don't care about etiquette and all that. It's expected.

  • I'm lost. What's a dollar dance?
  • We are not doing one. I had never heard of this before joining TK and FI and I aren't doing many dances anyway so this just adds to our desire not add any more than we need to.
  • I don't think we will be doing a dollar dance. Both FI and I don't really like to dance and I don't like to seem like we're begging for money. My mom was pushing for one. She said that normally someone other than the bride and groom set it up so that it doesn't seem like they are begging for money, but I still don't think we're going to do one.

A dollar dance is when the bride and groom  take turns dancing with their guests and if you want to dance with them you pin a dollar (or sometimes more) onto their dress/suit.  It's very common in among latinos, filipino and greek cultures (this is where I've seen them).  I think maybe eastern europeans do it too.

Ah. I've never seen this done - or doe/stag parties

but unlike the etiquette  board - I feel that if things are commonplace in your area - and you want to do - freakin' do it. Who cares. Guests aren't REQUIRED to participate - and it sounds fun.

  • No we are not doing that
  • Nope, not my thing. It's normal to do them here though. Almost everyone I know does it :)

  • I have seen this done many times so I don't think it's unusual, but I don't care for it and my family hates them, so we aren't having one at my wedding.

  • I think they are frowned upon by people because they think the money is used for the honeymoon.  This is sometimes not the case.  When I was in seventh grade my cousin got married and he and his wife used their dollar dance money to buy their washer and dryer.  It was so funny because I went up to dance with my cousin and his best mas refused to take my dollar.  I am the baby on this side of the family.

We are not having dancing at all at our reception so we are obviously not having a dollar dance.

  • We were thinking about doing this, but we talked to our DJ and he said it probably wouldn't be a good idea because it would cut into our "party" time and our dancing time with all of our friends and family so we aren't.
