Punta Cana or Jamaica?

First time in the Carribean, looking for romantic, relaxing, AI, adults only and to see some beautiful sights. Want this to be a once in a lifetime type of trip....

Budget is around $5500.

Jamaica--- all the way!  We've been to La Romano in the DR and really enjoyed the resort (Dreams which is the family version of Secrets).  We've been to Sandals Whitehouse, Grande Riviera, and Royal Plantation and enjoyed the resorts and the island.  Plus, I think you can get more for your money in Jamaica. 
(We actually didn't stay in Punta Cana in the DR because our travel agent recommended La Romano over Punta Cana since Punta Cana is the Atlantic Ocean and it is rougher.  My husband dives (I just snorkle) and she recommended La Romano for better diving and snorkeling.)
I can send you our tripadvisor reviews for each destination, just PM me.  Also our TA is very knowledgeable on both islands and helped us pick which resort within each island each time we've traveled.  I can send you her info as well.

I forgot to mention, we also went to Sandals La Toc in St. Lucia.  St. Lucia is AMAZING!!  It is our favorite island we have visited.  Your budget would work for St. Lucia I would think.
(We actually went to St. Lucia after the DR.  We really enjoyed the DR, but wanted our next vacation to be to an island that we could venture more out of the resort.  So our TA helped us pick St. Lucia. It is breathtaking- and offers so many activities outside of the resort.)

I would do Mexico so you can visit the ruins and do other activities.  I wasn't crazy about Jamaica (Rose Hall).  Bahamas Paradise Island was very fun and you could do it on that budget but not AI at PI.  Yep..still recommending Mexico (Riv. Maya)

We are going to Jamaica and have been once before and we love it! There are so many other Islands that I would love to see but Jamaica does tend to be a little less expensive so it allowed us to stay for longer. There are plenty of water sports and activities but honestly on my honeymoon I'm looking forward to relaxing on the beach. If you are looking for something more adventurous you can check out St. Lucia or Turks an Caicos I hear are beautiful. 

I don't know why but Mexico has never really enticed me except for Cozumel, which is also meant to be amazing.

We went to Punta Cana for a vacation about 2 yrs ago and the most amazing time. We stayed at the Excellance Resort and were treated like queens and kings! I highly recommend!

punta cana can give you more of the romantic - stay in the resort feel.

jamaica - you can do tours of the other major cities and the water fall
