Bringing in own drinks and snacks @ cruises?

Re: Bringing in own drinks and snacks @ cruises?

  • I actually have experience on Carnival regarding this issue.  You will not need snacks because there is a ridiculous amount of food available on these ships.  You are allowed one bottle of wine, but you have to pay an uncorking fee (unless you bring your own wine opener which is what we did).  Also, if you buy alcohol at any of the ports of call you will be required to check it when you return to the ship for the day and they will deliver it to your stateroom the day you disembark from the ship.  Last summer my family and I went on the Carival Freedom and we just put bottles of vodka and rum in our suitcases and kept them in our room the whole trip.  You have free juice on the ship and can pay for a soda card which is good for the entire trip.  You can share your soda card between the two of you and just make drinks in your room if you would like.  I have done this for two cruises now and would definitely do it again because of all of the money it saves you.  If you are not a big drinker however, you may be better of just bringing a couple bottles of wine and just paying for drinks.

    Hope this helps!!
  • There's no need to bring snacks aboard as there is food everywhere on cruises. There's always a buffet open somewhere, and room service is 24 hours (and free). And trust me, you'll feel like you gained 10 pounds after the trip!

As for the alcohol, depending on the cruise line, you can bring one bottle with you onboard, but if you buy anything while in port, they take it from you when re-boarding the ship and store it below until the end of the cruise. DH and I bought a bottle of rum in St. Thomas and were surprised they didn't take it from us when re-boarding but it was because it was the last day of our cruise. The drink prices on cruises really aren't as bad as people seem to think they are. They're no more expensive then going out to a local bar. If anything, I feel that the mixed drink prices are cheaper than going to a restaurant and getting a drink. Also, look out for the drink of the day which is always discounted. A bottle of wine, will definitely have a mark up as it does anywhere else you dine out, but if you stick to wine by the glass, a beer, or a mixed drink the prices aren't too bad.
  • Food is free and everywhere, so I don't think you need that.

As for the booze, like other posts said, you need to check with the cruise line... some do not allow you to bring much on board.

  • carnival allows you to bring one bottle of wine per guest. there is only a corking fee if you consume in the restaurants or bars. in your room you don't have to pay.

dont worry about snacks-plenty of food.

as for soda-why bother? it's heavy and may be confiscated at boarding.

as for bringing wine or alcohol on board from the ports-nope. it will be confiscated and returned to you at the end of the cruise.
