Input Needed on Honeymoon Options

We are from Alberta and have several ideas for our honeymoon. We'll be leaving on Mother's Day (wedding May 11, 2013). We are history majors and the bulk of the trip would be touring historic sites.

1. Disney Land and touring the western states on the way there and back. My parents went there and had a lot of fun. They still talk about it 32 years later, but that was a long time ago and I'm not sure how warm it will be then. Neither my fiance nor I can handle heat & lots of sun (I resemble a vampire with my inability to tan).

2. Touring Eastern Canada and dipping into New England to look at the areas significant to both American and Canadian independence. This would be a longer trip, but in a much cooler part of the world and benefiting our own country's tourism more.

3. Touring around Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia and exploring western Canada's rich history. My fiance's family is tied to some near where they live and the local museums are incredibly interesting, but maybe we should leave those for future family vacations.

  • I think one sounds awesome, but I love Disney, sunshine, beaches, and wine so we seem pretty different - I think two sounded more like what you want and what you and your fi would enjoy. Milder weather and so much history and just really cute places to go and explore.

  • How long is your HM?  Are you driving?  We drove from Seattle to San Francisco, and it was a 10 day trip and we still didn't see a ton of things we wanted to see.  You would need quite the trip to tour the western states all the way to Disney and back.

  • I actually love Disneyland because it has a lot of history that Disney World just doesn't.  In May California won't be too hot at all.  Late May/Early June is when you get "June Gloom" where it can be cloudy and gloomy for a few days here and there (which is extreme for CA!).  You may get a warm day and even a few days in the 70s, but I don't remember it ever getting higher then that in May.  This past year it was really cold and gloomy pretty much into July, a very bizarre summer!   (PS- I lived in San Diego, not LA, but it's all basically the same).

I'd throw some Monterrey and San Francisco into the mix if you are driving.  Maybe come down through Washington and Oregon which is beautiful and has a lot of history.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

  • i vote #1. it will be warm-80s. get yourselves some sunscreen and bottled water and you'll be fine.

  • I love option #2. Disney is great, but having your own personal trip sounds amazing. You may not have the warm weather, but creating your own trip will be all that more memorable. Depends what you're looking for on your honeymoon. If it's great weather you're after, Disney could be the pick :)

We havn't talked about how long it will be, but being university students that have managed to avoid debt so far (road construction PAYS), it can be pretty much as long as we like. When my parents went down, I think they took a month or so, but they were farmers with no animals and had incredible neighbours looking after the place. We would most likely take a week down, a few days at Disneyland, then another week back to good ol' Alberta. Something like that. Maybe longer since we won't have jobs calling us asking where we are. We'll have just graduated university and will be working for about a year before we go on to our second degrees (teaching). To help keep down costs, we're borrowing his parents' Smart Car (it's name is Dilton - lol cute) for the trip.

At this point, we've nixxed #3 as family outings down the road.

  • I think you should do whatever sounds the most fun to you and your FI.

Personally, I just can't get on board with disney honeymoons, then again I don't have a love for disney. It's fine enough for a family trip every 10 years but that's about it for me. I love children, but in no way do I want to spend my honeymooon getting run over by strollers and having to be around huge crowds. I know people who did disney honeymoons and had a blast, but they're into disney.

We're going unconventional and waiting a few months after our wedding and spending two weeks skiing in aspen for our honeymoon. It's not what most couples would do, but we think it'll be fun (although I admit to wanting a beach honeymoon, but FI really wants skiing and I do love to ski).
  • That would be a lot of fun. My cousin and his wife went sledding in the mountains for their HM and had a blast. We think both #1 & #2 would both be fun as neither of us have been outside Western Canada before. Each one has pros and cons and we just don't know which way to go.

  • I like the third option of Western Canada. Disneyland or Disneyworld is my idea of hell for a honeymoon. Families, children everywhere, waiting in lines in the heat, bad food...not romantic haha!

I think it would be so cool to tour around Western Canada-I'm very unfamiliar with the area there so it would be an adventure!
  • It really depends what you would like to do most.  I have to say though, if you are planning on driving, it is a VERY long drive from the prairies to Eastern Canada - I am speaking from personal experience.  To get to Toronto from Saskatchewan/Alberta is 3 days of 12-13 hour days.  Although it brought me and DH closer together, unless you have a LOT of time, it is a very very long and tiring drive.  I don't want to turn you off of Eastern Canada as there are lots of exciting things to do here, and the landscape is so different from Western Canada.  I just want to make sure you know what you're getting into with the drive! If you could get a good deal on flights, it might be worth it to fly into TO and rent a car. There are beautiful places in Southern Ontario for honeymooning, especially in the Niagara peninsula - think beautiful wineries and B&Bs, and its only 4-5 hours from Toronto to Montreal and Ottawa.
