How do you know what's legit?

We will be taking our honeymoon in about a year from now, so we're looking online to see what's available.  We are hoping to go to the Caribbean somewhere.  But with so many islands, and so many resorts on each island, I'm having a lot of trouble narrowing my search!  Of course every resort's website makes that place look fantastic, but how do you know what's really a good place to stay, and what's not?  Is there any way you can actually tell whether the area is reasonably safe, the staff is friendly, the sheets are clean, etc.?
I'm afraid that using a travel agent will limit our options to only the places that person happens to know about; plus, I'm afraid it will end up costing us more.
Part of me wants to stick with Sandals resorts because they have a good reputation... another part of me wants to find something more unknown so that it might be more private, personal and less busy.  I have no idea how to narrow my search!  Help!!

  • Have you ever been on tripadvisor.com?  There are tons of reviews on that site for just about any place you could imagine.

  • My FI and I had the same problem while trying to pick somewhere in the Caribbean. We are now narrowing it down because we made a list of what we want most out of our honeymoon, set a budget, and then we met with a travel agent. I highly recommend doing that. She gave some great suggestions that seem to meet all of our requests, and stay within our budget. Also check out tripadvisor.com, it's a great resource.
We now we have a more clear direction of where to look....Turks and Caicos or Anguilla, both look amazing!
    Good luck :)

  • Tripadvisor. They have reviews and pictures that you won't get on the resort websites. You can also message people who have written reviews and ask questions.

  • Ditto to all above. We're actually cruising, but the best excursions are more affordable and just better through osme of the local agencies, rather than the cruise. Tripadvisor has been so helpful!

  • Call a travel agent.  They can help you narrow down your choices as the islands can be very different from one another.
