Need your votes! Which Rome hotel?

My FI and I are going to France and Italy for our Nov. honeymoon.  We found 2 AMAZING hotels in Rome, and both have a lot going for them.  We can't decide!

The first one, Hotel San Anselmo, is GORGEOUS.  It is the #3 most romantic hotel in all of Rome.  However, it is situated a bit further outside of Rome and would probably require the train to get to the city center, unless we walk for 40 minutes (do-able, but not ideal).  Also, the trains stop running at 11:30pm, so if we decide to get silly we may need to spend $$ on taxis.     http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d237189-Reviews-Hotel_San_Anselmo-Rome_Lazio.html

The second one, Albergo Del Sonato, has PRIME location.  It is right next to the Pantheon, a 9 minute walk from Trevi, and it is ranked as the #2 hotel in ALL of Rome.  The reviews are amazing.  However, the rooms look smaller than the San Anselmo, and they don't look as nice.  It's just not that romantic looking in the "Double" rooms that we could afford.  And that takes me to point #2...it's $59/day more than the other one.  Would you pay that much extra for such a great location?  Or would you save your $300 over all and just take the train/taxis to the city?   http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d191099-Reviews-Albergo_del_Senato-Rome_Lazio.html

[QUOTE]I vote the hotel with the better location.   You could end up spending extra on cabs/train and then you've spent an extra $59/day as it is if you stay further away. I wouldn't let the size of the room be an issue.  You will be out and about so much that you'll probably only use the room as a place to change/sleep. We're actually leaving for Italy on Tuesday. :)  We rented an apartment for the 3 nights we're in Rome. Have you guys looked into that option?

I didn't!  Where is your apartment located?  What website did you use?

  • youre going to spend the money your saving on the taxi/trains anyways.  And the hotel is still beautiful.  The size of the room, doesn't really matter you aren't going to be there too often.  Make sure you eat dinner one night at Fortunados.  It's right up the street from you!
  • When I travel, hanging out in the room is not high on my priority list... but seeing the sites definitely is!  Stay in Rome.
  • Location location location!

It'll be so nice to be able to walk to so many areas.  Relying on trains all the time is a pain.  I'd go for the better location.  You won't be spending much time in the room anyways.
  • ive stayed at albergo del senato. it's fantastic. it's much less than a 10min walk to trevi-more like 4. just to give you an idea-it's 15 to colosseum, 5 to piazza navona, 25 to vatican, about 20 to spanish steps.

the location is superb. the wine bar just outside the front door on the corner is excellent.

  • and the rooms are very very nice, very comfortable and the bathrooms are huge-some of the largest i've seen in my travels in italy.

Here's the thing - the pantheon area is very nice, so there's something to be said for staying there.  But most of the things you'll probably want to see are likely to be closer to the other hotel (unless the vatican is a priority for you).  I spent a month in Rome a couple years ago.   Where are you aiming to visit?  The entire city is walkable - I've walked from one end to the other more than once in a day.  Not saying it's easy, but that was after 5 hours touring the vatican museums so...

I am also staying in Rome and did a lot of research. Almost everyone said it's worth the extra money to stay close to everything. I am staying at Hotel Adriano.
