Anyone been to Montana?

Anyone here visited and/or lived in Montana? FH and I are thinking about honeymooning there, specifically the Bozeman area. We are outdoorsy and love hiking, etc., but we also want to relax. Our honeymoon will be in August. Any suggestions for places to stay/things to do would be much appreciated :)

Re: Anyone been to Montana?

  • I would looooove to check out Glacier National Park, but that's pretty far from Bozeman.  Bozeman doesn't look too far from the Northwestern part of Yellowstone though!

I don't have any recommendations, so I'm pretty much useless, but I think it would be a cool HM!

You might want to try the Montana board, too.

  • I am from Bozeman! Perfect place to come if you like to hike. There are so many trails in and around Bozeman. They range from 20 minute hikes to all-day hikes. You can soak in the Norris Hot Springs or stay the night at Chico Hot Springs. We have been to Yellowstone and back in one day. Virginia City is a ghost town that is great to visit and the Lewis and Clark Caverns are very unique! Our downtown has great little hangouts to have lunch or dinner. Sweet Pea Festival is also in August. If you want to relax, Bozeman is a great place to do that too! Good luck in your planning and let me know if you have any specific questions.

I live in Missoula, but I haven't been to Bozeman. Oh the shame!Embarassed Glacier and Yellowstone are amazing! I have heard Chico is nice too. Pretty much anywhere in Western Montana is beautiful if you love mountains and outdoor stuff.

  • I went to college in Missoula & my fiance was born & raised in the Kalispell area.  Bozeman is definitely a very pretty area with lots going on nearby, but I would also recommend checking out Whitefish.  Whitefish is a gorgeous but small, quaint mountain town set along the beautiful Whitefish Lake and only about 15 minutes from Glacier National Park.  Glacier is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in the US - and, as much as I love Yellowstone because I actually worked inside the park when I first moved up there, I think the peaks and glaciers inside Glacier are amazing.  Plus, Whitefish is touristy so there are some prime lodging choices (including the ski resorts) there as well as more rustic places.  It will be gorgeous up there in August!  If I were there for a HM, I'd probably book horseback riding for sure, rafting (though August isn't the best time for this it would still be really fun), fly fishing, travel all the way to the East side of Glacier to check out St. Mary.

Alternatively, if you do decide to go to Bozeman, I would check out Yellowstone (obviously) and possibly spend a night in the park or even down south in Jackson Hole so that you could get more out of it rather than just driving through & visiting Old Fiathful or Mammoth Hot Springs.  Plus, if you go to Jackson, you can check out Grand Teton National Park as well & go up the tram.  I would definitely stay a night at Chico Hot Springs, which is super fun and just a really cool experience (I think it's between Livingston and Gardiner MT).  Big Sky is also really beautiful & close to Bozeman and has options for some really great white water rafting, horseback riding, fly fishing, etc.

Montana is great in the summertime, and the beauty there will knock your socks off.  I think it would make for a really cool honeymoon especially for someone who has never been there before.  It's breathtaking.
  • Wow, thanks ladies! I really appreciate your suggestions and input--we're definitely leaning towards a Montana honeymoon even more now! I'm really excited. Although I have visited California, Washington and Nevada, FH and I have never been anywhere west of the Mississippi/east of Nevada!
  • I've been to Big Sky several times, and it's beautiful! I'd definitely recommend it.

  • I'd suggest flying into Bozeman and renting a car and driving to Big Sky and/or Yellowstone. I've been to Yellowstone in the summer and Big Sky in the winter and both were gorgeous! You'll definitely need a car to get around, so make sure to rent one when you get in.
