inexpensive honeymoon ideas?

My fiance and I live in northern Minnesota.  We did want to go to a place in Hawaii to see the Pearl Harbor memorial but neither of us are 25 to rent a car nor do we have the money since we're both college students.  So to keep it within the connected states, what sorts of places have you gone to or have heard about that are within driving distance and that's not overly expensive?

Re: inexpensive honeymoon ideas?

  • Yeah, define inexpensive, and we'll be able to throw more ideas out.

FWIW - you can get a bus to Pearl Harbour. You don't need a car.
  • Yep!  I probably should have given a price range =p  Well the price range I'm looking for is between 1000-2000 dollars for everything, food, lodging, gas, all that fun stuff included.

  • To piggyback, I live in WA and Salish Lodge is great. Snoqualmie Falls is beautiful but it looks best right after the snow begins to melt in the spring.

I'd also recommend FL is you're looking for warm/beachy :o)

  • Yes FL would be great if you want the beach and can be done really affordably. The Carolinas are also beautiful. If you wanted something in driving distance, you could do Chicago. TONS of stuff to do and they do have beaches also :)

  • Agreed with PP...I've heard of several couples HM'ing in Chicago.

In the summer there's the beach, Navy Pier, Sears Tower, etc.

Also, several of the big musuems and attractions (Shedd Aquarium, Science and Industry, Field Museum) offer "free" days during the week days.  The dates are posted on their websites.
  • Depending on the car rental company, some companies will let you rent a car when you're under 25, you just have to be 21 and pay a type of service fee to do so. I would check out southwest.com and see where you could go for cheap (their flights are so awesomely cheap) and check out car rental companies that will allow you to rent under 21, and you should be good to go. It'll open up a lot of options for you. HTH! =]
  • thanks a ton everyone!  I looked into the Salish resort and so far my fiance and I like it a lot.  We're still looking around though. And Chasity, that's a great idea!  Thanks for telling me about that.  I'll have to look further into it when I'm done with classes for the day.

  • Not sure if either of you have been there, but Las Vegas is amazing.  If you have never been, i would highly recommend it.  You can stay in a super fancy hotel and have amazing dinners, see shows, relax at the pools, see the grand canyon.  There is a ton to do... you can find great hotel and flight packages online and you do not need a car, there are taxis everywhere.  Just a thought! :)

  • From my understanding you can rent if you're under 25, you just pay higher fees b/c of insurance and your age you'd be considered a higher liability.
  • How about Vermont? Lexus Magazine (i do some work for them) has a great article on a cute inns, lodges, and fun things to do. A cozy bed and breakfast sounds like a great honeymoon to me! Check out the article (and gorgeous photos!) here
