Re: Where are you going?

  • We are going to St. Lucia Regency La Toc.  We are soooo excited!  All inclusive, inlcuding, most sports (snorkling, sailing, etc.)  Depending on what room you choose, depends on how much money you want to spend.

We stayed in Disney for a bit after our wedding and then we went on a Caribbean cruise. It was great! Titanic was a long time ago and ships have come a long way since then! He will be fine! They do an emergency briefing in the beg. of every cruise and there are enough life boats for everyone.

  • We are going to Jamaica Sandal Ocho Rios for 5 night then The Ritz Carlton  Rose Hall Jamaica for 2 nights. I can not wait.
  • We are going to The Occidental Grand Aruba, all-inclusive....in 2 weeks.  All I can say is STOKED...being an October bride, I had a really hard time deciding where to go because of the hurricane season and such.  But, everyone I've talked to has raved about Aruba and because it's below the hurricane belt that it misses out on the season.  I'd research and figure out what it is that you and your FI want to do and accomplish on your honeymoon.

    Good Luck and Best Wishes!
  • We are spending 2 weeks in ITALY! I'm so excited! It'll be in March 2011, can't wait! Then we're also planning on swinging by Paris and Athens for a few days, but the bulk of our honeymoon is IItaly!  I can't wait! 5 more months!
  • We didn't want to risk hurricanes in September, so we did Europe.  We went to Iceland, Amsterdam, Italy and Dublin.

  • We're spending ten days in Morocco...flying into Casablanca, and planning to visit Marrakech and Fes.

We wanted to go somewhere different, that would be a completely new cultural experience.  I also wanted to go somewhere where we would have a language one of us knew for getting around (I know French fairly well and some Arabic).

I'm soooo excited about our honeymoon!!
  • We are going to Antigua to stay at Sandals! Im so excited!!
    Good Luck in choosing!!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Where are you going? : That's awesome...where are you staying?  What wineries will you be visiting?  We were there in April this year and had a fabulous time!! What are you doing about transportation?  If you haven't been there before (skip this if you have), then WATCH OUT for taxis!  They are not metered -- meaning it's flat fee from one place to the next.  The first time I went to Napa, we made the mistake of getting a cab.  We went from Yountville to a winery that was five minutes away (literally) and it was $45!!!  Without tip. In April, we rented a car and on winery days, we used a service called Napa Bee Driven -- they drive your rental for you and it's half the cost of getting limo/car service. Oh, HM -- we're going to Sandals in Antigua.

We are staying at a B&B called the Old World Inn. So far the wineries on our itinerary are definitely V. Sattui, Mondavi and Castello di Amorosa. We're doing a private limo tour one day we'll be there.

We're actually driving from LA (about 7 hours!) which lets us craft our own schedule and was a bit cheaper than flying. It will be nice to have a car to get to restaurants!

We have reservations at Mustards Grill and Cyrus so far and we're on the wait list for French Laundry every single day we're in town.

  • One of the first things FI and I agreed upon was no all-inclusive resort and no cruise.  We wanted more flexibility in creating our schedules and to explore a city and nature and culture.  So we are going to California!  I've never been out west, and FI has only been to LA once for a competition.

We will be spending our first couple days in San Francisco hopefully at a B&B (recommend any places?) and then we'll drive up to Redwoods National Park to explore beautiful nature and hike and hide out in a cabin (again, recommend any places?)  Then we will fly across country to usptate NY where I spent 4 summers working at a YMCA conference center/vacation place and we will volunteer for a week so we can celebrate with some of my friends who won't be able to attend the wedding and stay in the Adirondack mountains on a beautiful lake for free!

Then it's back to the grindstone of real life....moving for me, and then him starting band camp with his students!

  • Big Island! Hawaii baby!
  • I pushed for Greece but FI wanted to spend his days on the beach and it will still be a little to cold for that in April, so we're headed to Hawaii for two weeks.

    MEXICO HONEYMOONERS: BE CAREFUL!!

I've gotten a lot of intel lately on the drug cartels in Mexico targeting American tourists (in the past, they mainly had stuck to targeting each other in Mexico, but now they're turning on the U.S. due to the new fenceline, etc). Recently, 8 American tourists were killed in a hotel bombing in Cancun, and I was informed this morning of a male jet skiier being shot and drowned in a lake on the Mexico border while his wife watched and fled to call the police.

DO NOT tell anyone you are from the U.S.A. while you're there on your honeymoon. Don't wear any identifying clothing (souvenir t-shirts from the U.S., American flag shirts, etc) and don't do anything to draw attention to yourself.

I am not joking here, things are getting really bad in Mexico for U.S. tourists. I would hate for anything to happen while you're down there. Be safe, and be aware.

(I also posted this on the October 2010 board, but I think it went unseen since it filtered on to the 3rd or 4th page of threads)

I believe the people killed bombing in Cancun where actually local at a bar (or perhaps it's just another incident).

The shooting that happened was on the Texas/Mexico border...no where near Cancun.

IMO and also from my TA, Cancun/AI's are pretty much the livelihood for Mexico and if tourists stop coming b/c they don't think it's safe, then the country will suffer, therefore the goverment has put extra emphasis on trying to keep these areas safe and secure....that's not to say that something can't happen and you shouldn't be aware...but it's also not a reason to stay in the US either.
  • Yes, forgive me if the info I got was a little convoluted, I received it second-hand from my FI and his family (who are all tactical law enforcement).

You can never be too careful, especially with these drug cartels stepping up their game. They don't care if you're military or not, as soon as they find out you're American, you become a target. I've vacationed in Mexico many times before and loved it, however, after these recent incidents, I've been told by my command that it's no longer an option for me, as it is far too dangerous.

Just thought I'd put the warning out there.

  • Totally understandable.

I guess i've travelled to third world countries and honestly, everywhere we go/live, there are risks.

I did a quick search and found the warnings from US Department of State for MX, in case anyone is itnerested.

We're going on a cruise to the Caribbean (Grand Cayman, Belize, Honduras, and Cozumel).  The only vacation we've ever had together (and we've been together 5 years!) was a few hours away in Toronto (in January!) so we're super excited for a real vaction together.  I'm also graduating from law school in May, so beyond a honeymoon it's a "our real life is finally going to start" celebration.

I agree with what one of the PP said - cruises are pretty safe now. You're much more likely to get sick than to sink!
