Delayed Honeymoon?

Anyone else getting married and pushing the honeymoon off for a couple of months?  I'm getting married in April.  My FI is a teacher, which means he doesn't get any time off until late June, early July.  So, we'll need to plan a summer honeymoon.   The thing is, we want to go SOMEWHERE for just a couple of nights after the wedding.  Maybe Sun-Tues?  Any suggestions for inexpensive trips?  We live in NY.  We were thinking the Poconos or something?  I dunno.  Any suggestions?

Re: Delayed Honeymoon?

  • We delayed our HM for about 2 weeks, but I've seen posts by brides who delayed by a month or more due to work schedules.

As far as a close "mini-moon" location, have you been to Washington DC? It's my favorite place to visit, not sure of the drive time for you. All the musuems are free.........if you go below to the bottom of this board and search "this board" for "Washington DC", you'll get a lot of prior posts about it.

Boston is also a great place. If you and your fiance are sports fans (just guessing based on the hat in your picture), maybe visit one or more of the sports Hall of Fame? You have probably been to Cooperstown, but there's basketball in Springfield MA, football in Akron OH, and if you have passport, hockey in Toronto.

I'd also recommend Toronto which is very close to Niagara Falls on the other side of the Peace Bridge (I seem to recall from driving before). Toronto is a very metropolitan city with a lot to see and do.

    Good luck.
  • We are doing a mini-moon for two nights right afterwards, but our honeymoon will be two months after the wedding.

From the Hudson Valley area, you could go to a bunch of different areas, but it depends on what you want to do.  FInger Lakes, Lake Placid, NYC, DC, Jersey Shore, Block Island, Philly, etc.
  • What about Newport, RI?  H and I stayed there for a weekend in March for his birthday.  They have lots of cute B&Bs, scenic walks, great restaurants, wineries and a brewery nearby.  It wasn't very busy when we went, so it was quiet and romantic.
  • We're delaying ours for a month.  I couldn't imagine leaving right after the wedding!  There's too much to wrap up.  To round out the wedding weekend we're having a Sunday brunch and opening presents :)

Do you and FI like wine and outdoorsy stuff?  The finger lakes make a nice weekend away.  You can go on a wine tasting tour and hike the gorges.  Or you can come to the pocs as you suggested.  Have you ever been here?  I can give you lots of suggestions if you want.

  • A friend of mine from Australia delayed her H/M for quite a few months. They wanted to tour the USA as they have lots of friends there, and do a ComiCon follow as well (we're nerdy :P). They had a BLAST and who says a H/M has to be right away?? If you want a few nights to glow afterwards, a B&B on the lakes would be super nice

  • You could come up to Geneva/ the Finger Lakes and do the wine trails, the outlet malls and Smith Opera House.

  • we waited about 3.5 weeks. the days after our wedding we spent seeing the OOT guests that came to the wedding. we didn't do a mini-moon. it was great!

  • we're getting married in october and postponing our honeymoon until the end of May because we're going to Alaska and I didn't watn to go right after the wedding because I didn't want to be overwhelmed.  and any later is too late for Alaska.  We're going camping for our minimoon right afterwards the wedding.
As for a minimoon for you.. people have suggested some great options, I think it just depends on how far you want to drive and what you want to do.

  • We married in July and honeymooned in January.  Lots of couples wait ... sometimes years ... to go on their honeymoons.  We spent the night of the wedding (and the night prior) at the hotel which was our ceremony and reception venues.  I started a new job 2 days after the wedding.  Whew!
  • We got married September 3 last year and left for our HM May 8 of this year. So ours was delayed 8 months! We have a baby, and no one to watch him until then that we trusted. It was still amazing. The night of the wedding we stayed in a local hotel.

Our delayed hm was still amazing and romantic. We'd never travelled anywhere together other than the Maine/NH area.
