Hotel on Oahu - Ihilani

Hi everyone,

We will need a hotel on Oahu for 3 days in September. I am looking at the Ihilani JW Marriot, but am concerned with the Disney resort next door that it will be noisy and the beach will be crowded. Has anyone been here - or do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks

  • I have not stayed at that hotel, but I would highly recommend reading reviews on Trip Advisor. I have always found them to be pretty spot on and valid, good reviews.

As for other hotel suggestions, do you want to stay out of Waikiki? If not, we stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki for our HM and really enjoyed it. The adults-only infinity pool was awesome and looked out right over the Pacific. The service was great. It was big and quite busy, but we never felt it was loud or too overcrowded.

  • We stayed at the Aston Waikiki Beach and it was great. The pool is very exposed as it's right by the bar and grill so it's not so good for kids but awesome for couples. Room service was great and we had awesome views.

  • I lived on Oahu for 4 years. You should be fine staying at the Ihilani. I haven't stayed there personally but I have been to the beaches around there and all seems fine. Personally, I would never suggest anyone stay in Waikiki... might as well spend less money and go to some big beach city mainland like LA or San Diego.
  • I just returned from a stay at the Marriott Beach Club on the other side of the Disney resort actually.  It was the least disney-esque Disney resort I have ever seen, very reserved and elegant almost.  It was pretty quiet.  As for the beach, there are 3 manmade coves (for lack of a better term).  The one directly behind Disney was busiest of the three, but none were packed in the time we were there.  I wouldn't worry about the Disney resort.

I don't know what you are going to Oahu for or how familiar you are with the island, but you should know that Ko Olina where Ilihani is located is NOT near anything else on the island.  There is a small shopping center with a restaurant or two across the way, and you have access to the other resorts and their restaurant but you will need a car to get anywhere else on Oahu.  Also, car rentals tend to be pricey at the airport.  We got a cheaper day rate at the JW itself.  Traffic can be awful getting out of Ko Olina.  You can try using the bus as we did one day, it took us about an hour to get to Honolulu, and the bus stop is on the side of the highway after you leave the resort area.
