Cruise?

I am trying to find a site online where I can look into a cruise for our honeymoon. FH wants to go to Jamaica and I would love to see all the little islands so I thought a cruise would  be a good option. Thoughts? Advice on cruise lines?

  • I've done lots of cruising and to be honest Jamaica is one of my least favorite islands for cruising.

IMO Jamaica is one of the islands where you are better of doing and AI. The cruise ports at Jamaica are not the safest to wander compared to other ports like St. Thomas or St. Maarten.  The best thing to do if you do have a stop in Jamaica is to plan an excursion where you will do an activity or be on site at a resort.

If you do go off resort or walk around you will be bombarded to buy items, have your hair braided and imbibe in all sorts of different drugs.  It's certainly an interesting spot but I feel that there are so many other islands that are more interesting.

My favorites are St. Lucia and St. Maarten.

  • Consider doing one of the cruises out of NYC, NJ, or Boston to Bermuda. I just did one in August, and it was super relaxing. 4 days at sea to enjoy the sun & pool and 3 days in Bermuda to enjoy the sights & sand.

Since you're from NY, you would potentially save a bunch of $$ as you wouldn't have to purchase a flght.

Norwegian is my favorite cruise line as there are no assigned times to do anything!

there are hundreds of those :) unless you want to charter a boat and go from one to another over the course of 6 months it probably won't happen LOL

check cruisecritic.com and look through some itineraries offered by different lines. head to your library and take out a few books. narrow down by which islands interest you and go there.

  • We're doing a Honeymoon cruise out of NY on Norweigen for 7 days to the Bahamas.  (I've been to Bahamas a few times but FI has not) We made the final payment today and we so sooo looking forward to it!  We booked it back in March.  We did not use a Travel Agent.  We looked at the cruise lines leaving from NY and decided from there.

    Happy Planning!
  • We are doing a pre wedding honeymoon to Nassua bahamas on a 4 night 5 day cruise with carnival. I have been on a few cruises now and I think it is by far the best vacation style. I agree with the above comments about Jamacia.

  • Sometimes its about the ship and not the destination. I've been to the Caribbean a multitude of times on different cruise lines - now I'm loyal to Royal! As mentioned before, consult a travel agent and they'll be able to match you with the perfect cruise line and intinerary.

  • I've been on Carnival, Norweign, and Disney. I also did Semster at Sea which was a cruise around the world over about 3.5 months. Norweign was actually my least favorite, I liked the idea of the unscheduled dining but I really found the food subpar and I didn't want to pay extra to go to the nicer restaraunts. It was also impossible to get a chair by the pool unless you went out super early. They did have good entertainment though. In the caribeean I agree that St Maarten and St Thomas were the best.

I think cool thing about cruising is you get to see a couple different places, but at this point I think I'm all cruised out. I'd rather stay on an island for a week instead of losing so much time stuck on a ship.

  • For what you are looking for, try a sailing out of San Juan. You get to visit a lot more ports than if you leave out of FL. So far our honeymoon cruise out of San Juan is my favorite and our Allure of the Sea cruise is second (for the ship not for the itineary though). I've only cruise on Royal Caribbean since DH and his family are loyal to royal but according to friends that have been on multiple lines, all the mass market, mid price cruise lines are the same.

I love cruising out of San Juan.  I love the islands in the Southern Carribean better.

Also, if you or your FI are the types that could potentially get sea sick OR get bored easily then I would try to find cruises that have FEWER days at sea.  I am the type that likes to be in port and on the go.  A day at sea here and there is nice, but the idea of spending days sailing down the Atlantic to get to the Caribbean has never appealed to me.  And I've heard it's choppier along the Atlantic until you get into the Caribbean Sea.

<div>There are so many cruises to choose from and in September 2014 there is more than just Carnival.  Royal Caribbean has amazing ships that go all year to the caribbean from Florida.  With your budget you could get a nice cabin on these ships, too.  I'm a travel agent and would love to talk to you about your options.  My email is mgiarretto@cruiseplanners.com.  Best of luck to you!</div>
