Passport Card and name change

Hi ladies quick question. FI and I are going on a Boston to Bermuda cruise in August. It is a closed loop cruise and I do not need a passport. However FI and I do not want to risk getting stuck there so we want to apply for the cheaper passport cards.
What happens when I get married and change my name? Do they issue a reprinted card with my new last name or am I stuck with this card with my maiden name?
Thanks!

Re: Passport Card and name change

  • Yes.  Totally stuck with the wrong name on your passport card. o_O

YOU have to reapply with your new name, and pay for it I believe, unless it's within a year of your original issue, I believe.  There's this super handy website where you can find the answer to this question: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
  • If you change your name within the year of when your initial passport is issued, they will give you a new one for free. That's true with the book anyway, so I assume it's true for the card. If you google 'us passports' the state dept's site is pretty clear and useful.

  • No one knows you have a name change until you change it for governmental purposes (ie driver's license, social security card, passport). If your trip is right after your wedding, I'd assume none of your ID has your new name. Only you 2 know that you have not processed the paperwork to change to your name. Therefore, I'd assume you travel with your existing documents until you change them.

the passport agency and DL/SSC are NOT linked. until you req to change your passport the passport agency won't know you've changed your name.
you can travel with your maiden name passport or card until you change it as long as it matches your air or other reservations.

  • You have up to a year to change your passport into your married name, after that there is a charge. I hope that info is true bc that is what our travel agent told us.

It is true b/c the lady at the passport office that was processing my passport told me the same thing when I got mine back in January.

  • FYI - passport cards are only good for land and sea travel.  So if you are 'stuck' in Bermuda and need to fly back to the states the passport card is not going to do you much good.
