Dominican Republic

We are finding that the most affordable all inclusive packages are in the Dominican Republic.  The resorts also sound lively and fun which is important to us.  I have read reviews of the country not being very safe but I"m not sure how much we would need to be afraid of on the resort.  Has anyone been to the Domincan and would like to share their experience?

Re: Dominican Republic

  • I've not been to DR, but I know some friends who have.  They felt perfectly safe on the resort.  In general, you cannot base your safety at resorts on the safety o f the surrounding area.  And let's be honest, most of the US "isn't very safe" either, but that doesn't stop you from living there.

But remember, that unless otherwise specified, crime and safety concerns are in the "local" areas (where the residents live), and some is in public tourist areas (shopping areas, beaches, etc).  Does not refer to the resorts.  Also remember that a lot of the precautions they warn you take are good common sense precautions to take ANYWHERE, including your own neighborhood.

  • We didn't have any safety issues when we were there (we stayed in Punta Cana). We went off the resort for excursions three times with no problems. If you decide to honeymoon at the DR you I'm sure you will love it, it's absolutely beautiful

we went to Punta Cana for a destination wedding and felt 100% safe on the resort. We also went shopping a couple times off the resort in the day and felt safe as well. The beach and hotel were beautiful (Majestic Elegance)
  • I would totally reccomnet this place,  an all-inclusive called Lifestyles. Had an awsome vacation. Great because it had quiet areas as well as bars and clubs. We even went waterfalling. This is the site we went through. They were great.

Tell them Kathleen sent you. They should remember us since our trip was not that long ago. Good luck!
  • I went a few years ago and did not stay on a resort. HOWEVER, my bestfriend had visited a few times prior both of us speak spanish (She speaks better than I can) so we had natives that lived there that hung out with us. They did say that people prey on tourist. Nevertheless, I had a blast! My fiance and I are going to get married there. I can't wait! I guess at the end of the day just use common sense.
  • I went last month & it was amazing!! I would go back in a second!! We stayed at the Excellence Resort and it was great! Sure the island might not be safe, but there are several place here in the US that are not safe either. You just have to be a smart traveler. We didn't go off the resort, so I wasn't worried at all.

That is where we will be honeymooning!  Any tips/tricks?  Did you get a taxi or did you pre-book airport transfers?

  • I second the Majestic Elegance- not for one second did we feel "unsafe". Beautiful resort and very fairly priced, I felt. If you book there, book in the Elegance Club- adults only and room service/butler services like you wouldn't believe. Oh and make sure you get your dinner on the beach as well- very romantic.
