PuntaCana, Dominican Republic

My fiance and I have already booked our honeymoon for PuntaCana, Dominican Republic at the Excellence resort. Has anyone else ever been to the resort or the DR? What did you think about it?

Re: PuntaCana, Dominican Republic

  • I didn't go, but our close friends honeymooned there this past October and RAVED about it. Not super helpful, but they loved it.
  • I stayed at the Bavaro Princess in PuntaCana and it was fantastic. There were some local shops down the beach a ways that we bought souvenir type stuff at, but we didn't venture off the resort much.

It was a great hotel, lovely beach, the food was fine, very friendly and helpful staff (who did appreciate it when you could speak a little Spanish, but most of them spoke English well) - but it wasn't much of a cultural experience, if that's something you're interested in.

I'm assuming most of the town's resorts are this way, but of course yours might differ. Have fun :)

  • Yes we are going there also I can't wait to go.....I'm on facebook with them and they sound like they have a good time. And everyone wants to go back.
When is your wedding and when are you leaving for the honeymoon.
  • We just booked the all-inclusive Majestic Elegance Club in PuntaCana. I know a few people who have been to the DR and no one was said anything bad about it! Can't wait!!!

We were at Excellence for 5 nights this past October.  There were a lot of honeymooners there.  The grounds are pretty nice and several pool options.

On the plus side, there are 8 different restaurants and you don't need reservations so it has less of that cafateria feel of many AIs where you eat at the same buffet place every night.  The rooms are very spacious--ours had a jacuzzi.  You can get room service all night and the beds on the beach are super comfortable.

On the minus side, the rooms are a little outdated in my opinion and the matress and linens a little on the lower end in terms of quality, if that kind of thing matters to you.  Our air conditioning was fine but a few other guests complained that their ooms weren't very cool.  Drink quality varies depending on which bartender serves you.  Once we found a good one, we just stuck with him the whole time.

I think it's a prefectly fine place for a honeymoon, very comfortable and nice looking.  Another FYI though: it will be US $70 per person for transportation from the airport and the ride is 45-60 minutes.
  • I also just booked Magestic Elegance!!! Everyone I talk to has said nothing but great things about DR. The resorts are mostly newer and compared to other islands your getting the same type of vacation at a better price!! I have never been so Im hoping it is as good as everyone says!  Good luck

We went there on vacation and stayed at the Majestic.  It's a very nice resort.  It's so beautiful there and there are lots of things to do at resort.  Not much to do away from resort, not in the best area.  We did go shopping right outside the resort they had a bunch of shops set up.  It was fun but be aware they are very aggressive there trying to get you to buy from their booth.  I would also suggest doing some excurisions but don't use the ones at the resort.  Those are fun but you get a better experience from some of the less popular ones.  I will tell you if you are up for adventure we did Xtreme Buggy it was the highlight of the entire trip.  They have a FB page you should check it out.  We rode dune buggys through the town, we stopped and had a snack at a store there.  We then went through the country side and to coconut farm and had fresh coconuts.  Then we went to a secluded beach, adn when I say secluded there is nothing there it was absolutely breath-taking.   You are going to have a blast.  One recommendation for the person staying at Majestic make sure you keep up with your towels if I remember correctly it was hard to get towels for the beach I would also recommend reading the reviews for ideas and tips.  We also brought big cups with us bc the cups they put the drinks in are small and not insulated so that was a plus. Congratulations!

  • Thank you Jaimie!! We actually saw the dune buggy tour online and we totally are going to do that!! Did you just book that when you where there or did you have to book this before you went? my FI and I dont want to miss out on this!! I have heard that about the towels too. It seemed to be a common complaint. I cant wait to go tho!! We are going in September :)
